تمنيت أن الشَّيبَ عاجَلَ لِمَّتي

تمنيت أن الشَّيبَ عاجَلَ لِمَّتي

وَقَرَّبَ مني فِي صبَاي مَزَارَهُ

وَقَرَّبَ مني فِي صبَاي مَزَارَهُ

I wished that gray hair had come early to my locks,

and brought forward its visit to me in my youth,

لآخُذَ منْ عصر الشباب نشاطَهُ

لآخُذَ منْ عصر الشباب نشاطَهُ

وآخذَ منْ عصر المشيب وَقَارَهُ

وآخذَ منْ عصر المشيب وَقَارَهُ

so I might take from the season of youth its vigor,

and take from the season of gray hair its dignity.
