ومستعبدٍand one who enslaves قلبَthe heart of المحبthe lover وطرفَهand his gaze
ومستعبدٍ قلبَ المحب وطرفَه
بسلطانby the sovereignty of حُسْنٍbeauty لاnot ينازَعُis challenged فِيin الحكمِrule
بسلطان حُسْنٍ لا ينازَعُ فِي الحكمِ
And one who enslaves the lover’s heart and gaze
By beauty’s sovereign power, unchallenged in its rule,
متينfirm in التقىpiety عفchaste in الضميرconscience عنfrom الخناlewdness
متين التقى عف الضمير عن الخنا
دقيقsubtle in حواشيthe nuances of الطرفthe glance والحسِand perception والفهمand understanding
دقيق حواشي الطرف والحسِ والفهم
Firm in piety, his conscience chaste and free of lewdness,
Subtle in the nuances of glance, perception, and understanding,
يناولنيhe hands me مسواكهhis tooth-stick فأظنهso I think he
يناولني مسواكه فأظنه
تحيلhas contrived فِيfor رشفيmy sipping الرضابsaliva بلاwithout إثمsin
تحيل فِي رشفي الرضاب بلا إثم
Hands me his tooth-stick, and I think
He has contrived to let me sip his saliva without sin.
