أبا مجرم ما غير الله نعمة
O father of a criminal, Allah does not change a blessing
لو كان يقعد فوق الشمس من كرم
If a people of nobility were seated atop the sun
أبعد الخيل أركبها ورادا
I mount my horse seeking battle
ألا لا تلمني إن فررت فإنني
Alas! Do not blame me if I flee, for I
بللت علي لا حييت ثوبي
You soaked me without even greeting me
ألا يا دوم لك النعيم
Behold! O Doom, yours is bliss
إني نذرت لئن رأيتك سالما
Indeed I vowed, if I saw you safe,
رأيتك أطعمتني في المنام
I saw you feeding me dates in a dream last night
أخطاك ما كنت ترجوه وتأمله
What you hoped for has eluded you
قد رمى المهدي ظبيا
The chosen one flung his arrow at a deer
أرى الشهباء تعجن إذ غدونا
I see the stars kneading as we set out
أما ورب العاديات ضبحا
By the Lord of the running horses at daybreak,
نح عنك الطبيب واسمع لنعتي
Turn away the doctor and listen to my advice
ألم تريا أن الخليفة لزني
Have you not seen that the Caliph has deviated me
وكنا نرجي من إمام زيادة
We were hoping an imam would bring more
إن كنت تبغي العيش حلوا صافيا
If you seek a life sweet and pure,
إني لأحسب أن سأمسي ميتا
I feel that I might die this evening
يا قوم إني رأيت الفيل بعدكم
O people, after you all left
خافي إلهك في نفس قد احتضرت
I fear for your soul in a self that is now dying
خافي إلهك في نفس قد احتضرت
Fear your God in a soul that has come to ruin
سقاني أبو بشر من الراح شربة
Abu Bashir gave me a sip of comfort
أبلغي سيدتي بالله
Lady mine, inform her that I pine,
أبلغا ربطة أني
Tell the beloved I
عينان واحدة ترى مسرورة
Two eyes are seen, one delighted
ألا أيها المهدي هل أنت مخبري
O Mahdi, will you inform me,
هل في البلاد لرزق الله مفترش
Is there in the land sustenance from Allah spread out,
يقول لي الأمير بغير جرم
The prince says to me, though I'm innocent:
أمير المؤمنين فدتك نفسي
O Commander of the Faithful, I sacrifice my soul for you
أنعت مهرا كاملا في قدره
I announced the death of a stallion in his prime
يا أيها الناس قولوا أجمعين معا
O people, say altogether
إن الخليط أجد البين فانتجعوا
The mixed company grieved deeply when we parted
وجفاني الأمير كي أتقرا
The prince shunned me to recite
لقد خاصمتني دهاة الرجال
The ignorant men have argued with me
وكثنا كزوج من قطا في مفازة
We were like a pair of pigeons in a wilderness
ألا أبلغ لديك أبا دلامه
Shall I not convey to you the news of Abu Dulamah
رأيتك في المنام كسوت جلدي
I saw you in a dream, you clothed my skin
هاتيك والدتي عجوز همة
My aged mother, her strength undiminished
لعلي بن صالح بن علي
For Ali son of Salih son of Ali
يا ابن عم النبي دعوة شيخ
O cousin of the Prophet, the call of an old man
إذا جئت الأمير فقل سلام
When you come to the prince, say "Peace
أمسيت بالأنبار يا ابن محمد
O son of Muhammad, you stayed in Anbar,
إن الناس غطوني تغطيت عنهم
وكنا بالخليفة قد عقدنا
إني استجرتك أن أقدم في الوغى
أبعدت من بغلة مواكلة
إني أعوذ بروح أن يقدمني
أدعوك بالرحم التي هي جمعت
إني رأيتك في المنام
قف بالديار وأي الدهر لم تقف
ما أحسن الدين والدنيا إذا اجتمعا
أيهذا الإمام سيفك ماض
