Poetry's rhymes remain as long as I remain
أتظن يا إدريس أنك مفلت
Do you think, O Idris, that you can escape
صح الجسم يا عمرو
Health regained, O Amr
يا من بمطلع شمس ثم مغربها
O you at whose rising and setting sun
لو كنت أشبهت يحيى في مناكحه
Had you resembled John in his marriages
لله درك يا عقيلة جعفر
To God is your worth, O Aqilah daughter of Ja'far
بكت عنان مسبل دمعها
A sad-faced one weeps, letting down her tears
أرى القلب أمسى بالأوانس مولعا
I see the heart has become enamored with the beautiful women
إذا أم طفل راعها جوع طفلها
When a mother whose child's hunger pains her
ألم تر أن الجود من لدن آدم
Have you not seen that generosity flowed
طرقتك زائرة فحي خيالها
A white vision visited you, and brought to life her imagination,
قد أمن الله من خوف ومن عدم
God has granted security from fear and want
لقد كانت مجالسنا فساحا
Our gatherings were once so spacious
إلى المصطفى المهدي خاضت ركابنا
Our camels marched to the Chosen One, the Mahdi
إن بالشام بالموقر عزا
In Damascus the honored lies glory,
كأن التي يوم الرحيل تعرضت
As though the sand-colored gazelles that crossed
لا تعدموا راحتي معن فإنهما
Do not deprive me of my comfort, Ma'n
حمدنا الذي أدى ابن يحيى فأصبحت
We praise the one whose son Yahya fulfilled,
موسى وهارون هما اللذان
Moses and Aaron are the two
إن خلدت بعد الإمام محمد
If my soul is immortalized after Imam Muhammad
ما الفصل إلا شهاب لا أفول له
No dawn but a shooting star with endless light
لعمرك لا أنسى غداة المحصب
By your life! I shall not forget that morning of parting
ثلاثون ألفا كلها طبرية
Thirty thousand, all of them Tabariyyah
همام إمام له قدرة
A leader of great virtue
أعادك من ذكر الأحبة عائد
The memory of loved ones makes you weep again
نفحت مكافئا عن قبر معن
The fragrance wafted generously from Ma'n's grave,
تشابه يوما بأسه ونواله
His might and bounty were alike one day,
وقالوا الطالقان يجن كنزا
The slanderers said that the noble one amasses wealth,
طاف الخيال وحيه بسلام
The imagination wandered with its visions in peace
صحا بعد جهل فاستراحت عواذله
He awoke after ignorance, so his transgressions found rest,
ويوم عسول الآل حام كأنما
On a day of stifling heat like flames
إذا ما تذكرت النظيم ومطرقا
When I recall the singing-girl and her lute,
لو كان يقعد فوق النجم من كرم
If a generous tribe were to sit above the stars,
وما خلقت إلا لبذل أكفهم
I was not created except to give freely of my palms
فما بلغت حتى حماها كلالها
She had not reached full growth when her decline began,
أضحى إمام الهدى المأمون مشتغلا
The guided leader Al-Ma'mun became busy
بسبعين ألفا راشني من حبائه
He has showered me with seventy thousand of his affections,
مضى لسبيله معن وأبقى
He went on his way, and Ma'n remained,
وما فعلت بنو مروان خيرا
The Marwanid clan did no good
إلى ملك مثل بدر الدجى
To a king like the full moon of dusk,
يا وجه من لا يرتجى نيله
O face of one I cannot hope to attain
ما يلمع البرق إلا حن مغترب
The lightning only flashes when an exile yearns,
موفق لسبيل الرشد متبع
Guided on the path of righteousness, a follower,
وفكت بك الأسرى التي شيدت لها
The shackles were broken by you, those that were built for them
سيحشر يعقوب بن داود خائبا
Jacob son of David shall be summoned, disappointed
أمسى المشيب من الشباب بديلا
Old age replaced youth as a guest
أنعى إليك نفوسا طاح شاهدها
I mourn to you souls whose witness lies
شفاء الصدى ماء المساويك والذي
The cure for drought is rainwater from the clouds which
لما سمعت ببيعة لمحمد
When I heard of giving allegiance to Muhammad
رأيت ابن معن أنطق الناس جوده
I saw the son of Ma'n whose generosity made eloquent even the dumbest.
يا أكرم الناس من عرب ومن عجم
O most generous of all people, Arabs and non-Arabs alike
نواضر غلبا قد تدانت رءوسها
The pastures have been overwhelmed by the abundant growth
أصاب الردى قوما تمنوا لك الردى
Misfortune has struck a people who wished misfortune upon you
تخيرت للمدح ابن يحيى بن خالد
I have chosen to praise the son of Yahya son of Khalid
هاجت هواك بواكر الأظعان
Your love agitated the early mornings of sorrows
لندبك أحزان وسابق عبرة
Your sorrows invoke lamentations, and precede weeping,
مسحت ربيعة وجه معن سابقا
بنو مروان قومي أعتقوني
مرى العين شوق حال دون التجلد
قطع الصوائم والشقائق دوننا
ما من عدو يرى معنا بساحته
أفي كل يوم أنت صب وليلة
لام في أم مالك عاذلاكا
كأنه حين يعطي المال يغنمه
لقد أصبحت تختال في كل بلدة
إذا بلغتنا العيس يحيى بن خالد
وسدت بهارون الثغور فأحكمت
ذهب الفرزدق بالفخار وإنما
زوامل للإشعار لا علم عندهم
أطفت بقسطنطينة الروم مسندا
خلت بعدنا من آل ليلى المصانع
إعص الهوى وتعز عن سعداكا
أسلم بن عمر وقد تعاطيت خطة
قاسيت شدة أيامي فما ظفرت
ظفرت فلا شلت يد بر مكية
بدولة جعفر حمد الزمان
