إذا قبضت نفس الطرماح أخلقت

هل يدنيك من أجارع واسط

Does a dweller in the quarters of Wasit draw you near,

لقد علم المعذل يوم يدعو

بان الخليط بسحرة فتبددوا

أعرفت ربعا غير آهل

يا دار أقوت بعد أصرامها

O house that was inhabited after its desolation

شث شعب الحي التئام

أتشتم أزد القريتين وطيئا

أساءك تقويض الخليط المباين

لم تعالج دمحقا بائتا

You did not treat a crushed one overcome

بان الخليط بسحرة فتبددوا

The clan dispersed with the sorcerers, so they vanished,

أبلغ أبا سفيان والنفس تنطوي

Tell Abu Sufyan while the soul draws in

ألا أيها الليل الطويل ألا أصبحي

O long night, hasten your passing, for nothing lasts but the dawn

أمن دمن بشاجنة الحجون

From the ruins of Demen with lofty walls

وما أروى وإِن كرمت علينا

Though you give us to drink in plenty

أقبح به من ولد وأشقح

Uglier than a scabby pup

سما للعلى من جانبيها كليهما

The sky reaches with both its sides to the sublime heights

لقد شقيت شقاء لا انقطاع له

I have suffered unending misery,

فمن كان لا يأتيك إلا لحاجة

So one who comes to you only when he needs something,

تبيت على أطرافها مجذئرة

She spends the night with claws unsheathed

لا تسكنن إلى سكون إنما

Do not settle into tranquility, for

ألم تزع الهوى إذ لم يوات

Have you not lost passion as you aged?

عقاب عقنباة كأن وظيفها

The hawk is like a secretary whose job

ورد العفاة المعطشون، وأصدروا

The thirsty camels arrived, pouring out

كأن بلاد الله وهي عريضة

As if the lands of God, though vast,

إني صرمت من الصبا آرابي

In my youth I was thin and slender,

ألا من لعين يجف سجومها

Alas, who has an eye whose tears have dried,

هل يدنينك من أجارع واسط

Can the dwellers of lowland Wasit or the wielders of Two Rivers' spears draw you near?

يا فرسي سيري وأمي الشاما

O my steed, proceed towards Syria

عرفت لسلمى رسم دار تخالها

I knew the house of Salma, though it seemed

طربت وشاقك البرق اليماني

The Yemeni lightning dazzled you

إن بمعن إن فخرت لمفخرا

Though you may boast of courage in one aspect

إن تختلف مضر تتبع عدوهم

وإن قال عاو من تنوخ قصيدة

نطعمها اللحم إذا عز الشجر

أخبرت ضبة تهجوني لأهجوها

أسرناهم وأنعمنا عليهم

أمن دمن بشاجنة الحجون

شت شعب الحي بعد التئام

طال في رسم مهدد ربده

لمن ديار بهذا الجزع من ربب

فلو كان يبكي القبر من لؤم حشوه

ورد العفاة المعطشون وأصدروا

لحى الله قوما أسلموا يوم بابل

نبيت تميما تجتدي حرب طيئ

نزلت بأعلى تلعة وفرزدق

ولو أن غير الموت لا قى عدبسا

غضي عن الفحشاء يقصر طرفه

أزجر العين أن تبكي الرسوما

فقلت لها يا أم بيضاء إنه
