لو كان بطنك شبرا قد شبعت وقد

ألم تعجبا للجاريات البوارح
Do you not wonder at the doves, as they flew,
دلنطى يزل القطر عن صهواته
The rain drips from its gutters
يكفي قليل كلامه وكثيره

كتمت الهوى يوم النوى فترفعت

على قعود قد وني وقد لغب

بعانسات هرمات الأزمل
With coy and graceful airs the nymphs advance
أجراع لينة والقلاخ فبرقها
Soft skins and stirring drinks as if lightning,
كأن حريقا ثاقبا في أباءة
Like a piercing blaze in stubbornness
ظلت بذاك القهر من سوائها
She remained under that oppression from her shepherd
لجت لأبناء الزبير مآثر
The sons of Zubayr have attained glorious deeds,
راحت رواحا قلوصي وهي حامدة
My she-camel went away, a stout Qalwashi she was,
حن الفؤاد إلى سلمى ولم تصب
The heart yearned for Salma though she was aloof,
يا أيها الرجل الموكل بالصبا
O you who are entrusted with youth
إلى ابن يزيد الخير باتت مطيتي
To the son of Yazid the benevolent, my she-camel spent the night
لو سألت عنا غداة قراقر
Had you asked of us on the morrow of clamour
أفرغ لها من ذي صفيح أوقحا
Pour into her from the jar impudence
وهواك مجنوب بأم عويمر
He is smitten with love for Umayma's mother,
يا دار أسماء قد أقوت بأنشاج
O home of Asma, I have become emaciated from yearning
أنمي فأعقل في ضبيس معقلا
I awake, sane, in a mighty citadel
والضرب قرطبة بكل مهند
And al-Ḍarb Qurṭubah with every polished sword -
قتلتني بغير ذنب قتول
You killed me though I'm not guilty, O murderer
قلب عقيلة أقوام ذوي حسب
A heart, resting place of noble folk
فما المال إلا سؤر حقك كله
Wealth is but veils drawn over your rights in full
وجدنا المحض الابيض من قريش
We found the pure white one from Quraysh
يا راكب العنس كمرداة العلم
O rider of the wild camel, tamer of the banner,
كان الكمي مع الرسول كأنه
The companion of the Prophet was as though
وفي عروة العذري إن مت أسوة
In the passion of love, if I die, I will be an example,
وجدت قريشا كلها تبتني العلا
I found the Quraysh all rising against me
دعها أبا وجزة واقعد في الغنم
Leave her be, father, and sit with the sheep
أمرون ولا دون كل مبارك
They command without any blessing
ألا طرقت سعدى فكيف تأفقت
Oh star of fortune, how you have shined upon me
قل لأبي حمزة هيد هيد
Tell Abu Hamza, come, come,
يا من على الجود صاغ الله راحته
O you whom God has fashioned for generosity,
يعرى هواك إلى أسماء واحتظرت
Your love is stripped bare to the skies, while she
تزور بي القرم الحواري إنهم
The noble houses of Al-Qaram visit me, for they are
إذا تربعت ما بين الشريق فذا
When you sit between the rising sun and the meadows,
فلست لإنسي ولكن لملأك
You are no mortal but an angel
دعتنا لمسرى ليلة رجبية
She called us to a journey on a rajab night,
قام إليها رجل فيه عنف
A violent man stood up towards her
طاف الخيال من ابن شيبة واعترى
The phantom of Ibn Shihab passed by and was distressed,
كأنما طرقت ليلى معهدة
As if Layla had come from the meadows at night,
لمن دمنة بالنعف عاف صعيدها

ولم يكن ملك للقوم ينزلهم
No ruler possessed a people, lowering them,
وآل الزبير بنو حرة
The sons of Zubayr, men of valor,
خليلي من قيس بن عيلان حليا
My companion, from Qays ibn Al-Aylān a greeting
أثني على ابني رسول الله أفضل ما
I praise the two sons of Allah's Messenger with the best praise
والماء لا قسم ولا أقلاد
فيهم جياد وأخطار مؤبلة
به من نجاء الغيث بيض أقرها
كأن الناصعات الغر منها
ألا عللاني والمعلل أروح
تربع أنهي الرنقاء حتى
ترعا يرعرعه الغلام كأنه
طاف الخيال بنا وهنا فأرقنا
كأن النقد والعلسي أجنى
ترى العلافي منها موفدا فظعا
بأجماد العقيق إلى مراخ
يهدي قلائص خضعا يكنفنه
أعطى عبيدا وعبيد مقنع
حلت به حلة أسماء وانتجعت
وجببت أسقية عواكما
ولولا غيره لكشفت عنه
