1. The heart yearned for Salma though she was aloof,
Why so much pining and passion in vain?

١. حَنَّ الفُؤادُ إِلى سَلمى وَلَم تُصِبِ
فيمَ الكَثيرُ مِنَ التحنانِ وَالطَرَبِ

2. Suad said, I wonder at this streak of grey,
Gently, Suad, grey hair is nothing strange.

٢. قالَت سُعادُ أَرى مِن شَيبَةٍ عَجَباً
مَهلاً سُعادُ فَما في الشَيبِ مِن عَجَبِ

3. You see time has clad me in its greyness,
What of it is past, from you was not hid.

٣. إِمّا تَرَيني كَساني الدَهرُ شَيبَتَهُ
فَإِنَّ ما مَرَّ مِنهُ عَنكِ لَم يَغِبِ

4. A draught to Suad though grey has pained us,
Ere this when the head had no greying tress.

٤. سَقياً لِسُعدى عَلى شَيبٍ أَلَمَّ بِنا
وَقَبلَ ذلِكَ حينَ الرَأسُ لَم يَشِبِ

5. As though its saliva after distress dissolved
Towards the Pleiades with the wine of Halab.

٥. كَأَنَّ ريقَتَها بَعدَ الكَرى اِغتَبَقَت
صَوبَ الثُرَيّا بِماءِ الكَرمِ مِن حَلَبِ

6. I was gifted a brace of chicks, green young,
Half bones and strong smelling feet.

٦. أُهدي قِلاصاً عَناجيجاً أَضَرّ بها
نَصُّ الوَجيفِ وَتَفحيمٌ مِنَ العُقَبِ

7. A difficult letter from the guide when the
Sun of day fills the reins of the lightning steed.

٧. حَرفٌ بَعيدٌ مِنَ الحادي إِذا مَلَأَت
شَمسُ النَهارِ عَنانَ الأَبرَقِ الصَخِبِ

8. Till when they folded up and night wrapped in folds
Of the cavern's owner, dry wood and brambles.

٨. حَتّى إِذا طَوَيا وَاللَيلُ مُعتَكِرٌ
مِن ذي أُكَيهفُ جِزعَ البانِ وَالأَثَبِ

9. They made for the chief of Kais and his chieftain's son,
The knight pure of them other than the liar.

٩. يَقصِدنَ سَيِّدَ قيسٍ وَاِبنَ سَيِّدِها
وَالفارِسَ العِدَّ مِنها غَيرَ ذي الكَذِبِ

10. Mohammed, his father and his son wrought
For him feats of glory and noble deeds.

١٠. مُحَمَّدٌ وَأَبوه وَاِبنُه صَنَعوا
لَهُ صَنائِعَ مِن مَجدٍ وَمن حَسَبِ

11. The army of the faithful kindled fire beneath them,
Like torrent in a vale bearing firewood.

١١. جَيشُ المُحمّين شَبَّ النارَ تَحتَهُما
غَرثانَ أَمسى بِوادٍ مُوهب الحَطَبِ

12. I praised them when I saw they had
Merit over others from all the Arabs.

١٢. إِنّي مَدَحتُهُمُ لَمّا رَأَيتُ لَهُم
فَضلاً عَلى غَيرِهِم مِن سائِرِ العَربِ

13. None can fault me but you,
Who can praise me if you do not?

١٣. إِلّا تُثِبني بِهِ لا يَجزني أَحدٌ
وَمن يُثيبُ إِذا ما أَنتَ لَم تُثِبِ
