ولم تتجاوز بالشفير بيوتنا
You did not pass by our homes with your breeze
يا بكر بكرين ويا خلب الكبد
O Bikr, my Bikrin, O torment of the liver
ألم تلمم على الطلل المحيل
Have you not rested in the abandoned ruins
إذا ألتف دون الفتاة الضجيع
When the sleek sandfox curls up near the girl
وأيسار إذا الأبرام أمسوا
When riches are exhausted, bosom friends deplore,
ونحن غداة كان يقال أشرق

فلا أعني بذلك أسفليكم

وتله للجبين منعفرا
His forehead adorned with musk perfume
ومنا ابن كوز والمنسم قبله

في كفه نبعة موترة
In his palm a troubled spring
مآشير ما كان الرخاء حسافة
My friend, prosperity was never free from peril
وإياكم إياكم وملمة
Beware, beware the whisperer
وأرض البر بعد وكل بحر
The land of wilderness after it all, and every sea
تذكر من أنى ومن لين شربه
Remember from where and from whose gentle drink I drank,
فإياكم وداهية نآدى
Beware the cunning of a foe's cry

وقد طال ما يا آل مروان ألتم

فاختل حضنى دراك وانثنى حرجا
My bosom warped with disappointment's ache
وتسمع أصوات الفراعل حوله

أحلامهم أم أحدث الدهر نوبة

فهم الأخذون من ثقة الأمر
The takers understand from the confidence of command
الا حييت عنا يا مدينا
O city that we revived, do not forget us

ستأتيكم بمترع ذعاقا

Have you not seen the people of the graves
تندى أكفهم وفي أبياتهم

كأني على حب البويب وأهله
As though I were in love with the dwellers of Buwaib
وتجمع المتفرقون
The scattered ones gather
كالليل لا بل يضعفون
Like the night, no, weaker than it

جعلت القذاف لليل التمام
I set the (train of) meteors for the complete night
والحياض الممللآت من الشر

أحلامكم لسقام الجهل شافية

تألق برق عندنا وتقابلت

As if the murmur of boiling in its sides

I found people other than my son Nizar
ولى يهز قناتي غير مختشيء
He turns away, shaking my spears, fearless,
هلا سألت معالم الأطلال
I asked the ruins about their beauty

You preceded in virtues every fighter
ألا أبلغ جماعة أهل مرو
Convey to the people of Marw
نعائي جذاما غير موت ولا قتل
I lament not death nor killing,

He casts his eyes as far as they can see
وقد يخذل المولى دعائي ويجتدي
The Lord may disappoint my prayer and increase
أولى وأولى له حسنى وسيئة
He is most caring of me in good and bad,

قبيح بمثلي نعت الفتاة
ترى السابح الخنذيذ فيها كأنما
غريرية الأنساب أو شدقمية
