- أتستقبل الدهر مستبشراDo you welcome time with gladness,
- أتنآى ورجلاك فوق الثرىDo you keep aloof, though your feet are on the earth,
- أدامك الله أيها الطللMay God preserve you, O ruin,
- أراها فتشتبك المقلتاI see her, and our gazes intertwine;
- أرت أم عباس أعجوبةUmm Abbas showed a marvel,
- أرخصت يوم فراقك الدمعاI lavished tears on the day of parting from you,
- ألبست من بعد الوفاءHave you donned, after faithfulness
- الشمس خلف الجبالThe sun behind the mountains
- الصبر أصبح درعه باليPatience's shield has become worn out,
- الصفو مثل الكمالSerenity, like perfection,
- أمل قطع حبل الأملA hope severed the cord of hope.
- إن في الألوان أسراراIndeed, in colors there are se-
- أنا أهوى الكمال في كل نفسI love perfection in every soul,
- أيسديك أولى الناس بالطيش حكمةYou, my soul, are foremost in recklessness and lack of wisdom
- أيسلو فؤادي أو أكتمCan my heart forget, or can I conceal my love?
- أيها المعرض ما هذا الجفاءO you who turn away, what is this coldness?
- أيهما كان الظلوم البليدWhich of the two was the unjust dullard—
- بعد أن طال في هواه صدوديAfter I had long been aloof in my love for him,
- بلدة خاب بمن فيها الرجاءA town whose people have dashed all hope
- بينما الجو بديع رائقWhile the sky was lovely and clear,
- جاء للقصر يخطرHe came to the palace, swaying as he walked,
- جف ورد الجميل في اللحدThe handsome man's rose withered in the grave,
- جلسنا عشاء بقرب النهرWe sat at nightfall beside the river,
- حفظ المودة للخليلPreserving affection for a friend
- ذاب قلبي عليه حين تدانىMy heart melted for him when he drew near,
- ذكريني يا نجمتي ذكرينيRemind me, O my star, remind me
- ذهب الوفاء فلا ندامهLoyalty is gone, so I have no regret
- ذهب اليوم وقد آن الغروبThe day has gone, and sunset's hour has come.
- ذهبالشباب فأطرقتYouth has gone, so she bows her head,
- رب لحن سرى مع النسماتMany a melody drifted with the breezes,
- سجيالليل والجو أمسى عبابThe night grew still, and the sky became a surging sea.
- سل القلب عن حبه جاهداAsk the heart earnestly about its love:
- سئمت نفسي الحياة وملتMy soul has wearied of life and grown bored,
- صبرت وما الصبر فيه الشفاءI have endured, but patience offers no healing.
- صدقت فيما حكت عنك الدموعThe tears were truthful in what they told of you.
- صمدت للعظات هذي الطلولThese ruins have endured sermons,
- ضجة جاوزت عنان السماءA clamor passed beyond the heights of heaven,
- ظهرت والفريق في دعةThere appeared, while the camp lay at ease,
- عشقتك والصبر عندي محالI have fallen in love with you, and patience is impossible for me.
- غريرة زانها الحياءAn innocent maiden whom modesty adorns.
- في اليوم ألف مصيبهA thousand calamities each day,
- قائم فوق شاطىء النهرStanding atop the riverbank
- قد رأيت المحال رأي عيانI have indeed seen the impossible with my own eyes;
- قد عشقناك لا لأنك أنثىWe have loved you, not because you are a woman
- قد قام فوق السهول أوحدIt has risen alone above the plains,
- قطع الدهر حبال الأملTime has severed the cords of hope,
- كم في سبيل الأمانيHow often, in pursuit of hopes,
- لقد مزق الشوق قلبي الوفيIndeed, longing has torn my faithful heart apart.
- ليالي النوى علمتني النحيباThe nights of separation taught me how to sob;
- من طريف الآثار والأخبارAmong curious traditions and tales:
- مولاي زغت عن الصوابMy Lord, I have strayed from what is right.
- مولاي قد نامت عيونMy Lord, some eyes have fallen asleep,
- نما على أرضها الشجرTrees grew upon its soil,
- هو البعد آلامه تقتلIt is separation—its pains can kill.
- يا خليلا أجل كل خليلO friend who honored every friend,
- يا قلب قد أشقاك ضيرO heart, affliction has indeed made you wretched,
- يلومني كل وقتHe reproaches me all the time,
