While the sky was lovely and clear,

The soul had room in it for serenity,

And the fresh breeze wafted, toying

    With branches swaying coyly,

And the pool's waters flowed at midmorning

Between the garden's trees like serpents,

And the sun's rays streamed forth from it

    Like long wires of light,

    Suddenly a storm assailed us,

With a far-spreading darkness of sand,

And a whistling like the blast of the Trumpet,

Announcing to the world its end,

And lightning that rained sparks upon us,

Enormous as a palace, or like yellow camels,

And thunder that made people oblivious

To the worldly goods they had amassed and their families.

    Or mountains crashing into mountains.

The worst battlefield, with the worst fighting.

If only some people had seen it—

Those whom nature's beauty had deceived,

So they forgot God, who created it,

Surpassing in His handiwork the bounds of perfection.

And submit, and leave the matter to Him who

Created the universe—exalted is the Possessor of Majesty.
