Our children fell asleep upon the sand,

While others turned to carefree evening talk.

وما هم نفسي سوى منظر

أثار بنفسي شتى الفكر

And nothing occupied my soul but a scene

That stirred all kinds of thoughts within me:

Ruins loomed atop the hills,

And in their silence lay lessons for reflection.

Indeed, they bowed their heads, and bore an air

That mirrored the weariness of one who waits in despair.

So between the ruins and the rugged hills

And the stars, I let my gaze linger.

فيرتد طرفي لي خاسئاً

كما ارتد ذو خيبة من سفر

Then my gaze returns to me, abased,

As one returns disappointed from a journey.

A fearsome stillness here is mingled with

The moaning of the waterwheels on the islands.

Dwellings have been emptied of people

And died, while barren land is alive with trees.

And on the water a bird, whenever frightened

By a stillness like death's silence, whistles.

You see the clouds along their course, at times

Gathering, at other times dispersing.

And on the distant islands appear

Fires like our fading hopes.
