And my stubborn tears poured forth for your sake.

Through your kindness, my friend, you took hold

of the reins of my wretched, proud heart.

And you taught me love for God's sake—nay, more—

and made me speak in graceful verse.

And after you, my soul has neither sought

    nor found a faithful companion.

Peace be upon a time now past,

like a dream we enjoyed one evening,

smiling like your face, my friend,

pure as your soul, gentle and pleasing.

Its sweetness is still my solace,

even if within it lies my slow death.

We passed that span of time, long though it was,

while we were both far from every wrong.

O Abbas, are you still mine,

and have you some of what I endure?

I do not doubt that what

is in my heart and yours is the same—O

messenger from heart to heart, whatever

longing you have, I surely have too.
