Patience's shield has become worn out,

Since she occupied my mind with her beauty.

So I spend the night yearning, a companion of passion,

Who cannot put meeting his beloved out of mind.

And indeed I concealed my infatuation from humankind,

To ward off the arrow of hearsay and idle talk.

O gazelle! Since she approached, reaching up,

She turned against me like a lion in its fury.

And over me, since she appeared adorned,

The lord of beauty appointed her ruler.

So I loved her, while my heart championed

Her beauty, deeming anyone free of love a fool.

And I thought she would become my ally,

Yet with her coyness she turned against me, not for me.

How many a night I have spent despondent

For my life's treasure, who spurns me with coldness.

Oh, if only she would listen in love

To my suffering as my reproachers do!

Cease the war that has broken out,

I swear by the rose of your cheek and its beauty mark.

Turn toward me again the eye that ravaged me—

A sword with which you severed my limbs.

And be assured that I have come to a love

Compared with which death's draught is sweeter to me.

    Because you withhold union, indeed,

My plight has worsened—I swear by my love for you.

So show compassion and gentleness to a young man

Who would have surpassed humankind, had he been free of love.
