فحتى م يارب صبر السماء

I have endured, but patience offers no healing.

I have been patient, yet patience brings no relief,

How long, then, O Lord, will heaven's patience last?

How long, my Lord, must the heavens' patience be?

لقد طال مني احتمال الأذى

لقد طال مني احتمال الأذى

وطال من الناس هذا الجفاء

وطال من الناس هذا الجفاء

Long have I borne harm,

I've endured harm far too long.

And long has this coldness from people lasted.

People's disdain of me has gone on far too long.

وما عابني غير أني فتى

وما عابني غير أني فتى

قليل الكلام كثير الحياء

قليل الكلام كثير الحياء

And my only fault is that I am a young man,

My only fault is that I am a youth,

Of few words and great modesty.

Few in words, abundant in modesty,

بريء من اللؤم لي مقلة

بريء من اللؤم لي مقلة

تغض وقلب بلطف الهواء

تغض وقلب بلطف الهواء

Free of baseness, I have an eye

Innocent of villainy, though I am accused,

That lowers its gaze, and a heart as gentle as air.

My heart turns away and is gentle like the breeze.

وديع صريح أمج الرياء

وديع صريح أمج الرياء

وأعجل بالصفح عن من أساء

وأعجل بالصفح عن من أساء

Gentle and frank, I spurn hypocrisy,

I am frank and honest, loathing hypocrisy,

And hasten to pardon whoever has done wrong.

Quick to forgive those who have done wrong.

وما غرني مظهر كاذب

وما غرني مظهر كاذب

ولا كان من طبعيَ الاعتداء

ولا كان من طبعيَ الاعتداء

And no false appearance has deceived me,

No false facade has fooled me,

Nor has aggression been in my nature.

Nor is it in my nature to be aggressive.

ويعجبني أن يقوم الولا

ويعجبني أن يقوم الولا

ءُ بين العباد مقام العداء

ءُ بين العباد مقام العداء

And I delight in loyalty taking

Yet it pleases me when loyalty rises

The place of enmity among people.

Among the people, replacing enmity.

ولكن أرى الناس ما همهم

ولكن أرى الناس ما همهم

كمال ولا طيبة أو صفاء

كمال ولا طيبة أو صفاء

Yet I see that people care nothing

But I see people care not

For perfection, kindness, or purity.

For perfection, goodness or clarity.

وهبني نبيا لهم مرسلا

وهبني نبيا لهم مرسلا

فهل يسمع الصم مني الدعاء

فهل يسمع الصم مني الدعاء

And suppose I were a prophet sent to them—

Make me a prophet sent to them -

Would the deaf, then, hear my call?

Will the deaf hear my call?

وهل يوجد الخير في عالم

وهل يوجد الخير في عالم

الى الله قدما أبوهم أساء

الى الله قدما أبوهم أساء

And can goodness be found in a world

Can goodness be found in a world

Whose inhabitants' father wronged God long ago?

Whose forefathers set out to do evil?

سأنزل عن منصب يقتضي احتكاكي

سأنزل عن منصب يقتضي احتكاكي

بشر الورى الأغبياء

بشر الورى الأغبياء

I shall step down from a post that requires me to deal

I will step down from a post

With the worst of humankind—the fools.

That brings me into contact with the witless throngs,

يكلفني ثمنا صحتي

يكلفني ثمنا صحتي

وخلقي وحريتي والهناء

وخلقي وحريتي والهناء

It costs me my health as its price,

Costing me my health,

And my character, my freedom, and happiness.

Character, freedom and joy.

وهذي إذا فقدت لم تكن

وهذي إذا فقدت لم تكن

لتعرض للبيع أو للشراء

لتعرض للبيع أو للشراء

And these, if lost, cannot

If these are lost, they cannot be

Be offered for sale or purchase.

Put up for sale or purchase.
