النابغة الذبياني

جزى ربه عني عدي بن حاتم

May his Lord reward Adiyy ibn Hatim

ألمم برسم الطلل الأقدم

Touch the image of ruins most ancient

من مبلغ عمرو بن هند آية

Who will convey to Amr bin Hind an ayah

المرء يأمل أن يعيش

Man hopes to live long

عفا ذو حسًى من فرتنى فالفوارع

He who is of sound judgment pardoned my dereliction, so the obligatory duties remain neglected;

كليني لهم يا أميمة ناصب

My worries burden me, O Umayma, as I endure

كأن الظعن حين طفون ظهراً

As though when the lances appeared dorsal

ألا من مبلغ عني خزيماً

Alas! Who will convey on my behalf to Khizaymah

عوجوا فحيوا لنعم دمنة الدار

They turned aside and greeted the boons of the inhabited abode

ألا أبلغ لديك أبا حريث

Shall I not convey to you, O father of Hurayth,

جمع محاشك يا يزيد فإنني

Gather your belongings, O Yazid, for I

أتاركة تدللها قطام

A seductress, caressed by slender waists,

ولست بذاخر لغد طعاماً

I do not hoard for tomorrow food

فأضحت بعدما فصلت بدار

So she became, after being separated in a house

سألتني عن أناس هلكوا

She asked me about people who perished

إذا تلقهم لا تلق للبيت عورة

When you meet them, do not expose the house's shame

فتى تم فيه ما يسر صديقه

A youth in whom what gladdens his friend was perfected

صبراً بغيض بن ريث إنها رحم

Patience, hated son of Rath! For she is a womb

يا مانع الضيم أن يغشى سراتهم

O defender against wrongs that would overwhelm them

بعاري النواهق صلت الجبين

With my noble stature I bow down

أهاجك من أسماء رسم المنازل

The outlines of the dwellings aroused your longing

حباء شقيق فوق أحجار قبره

The love of a brother above the stones of his grave

أمن آل مية رائح أو مغتد

Is it the fragrance of the House of Mayya, or an impassioned lover?

ياعام لم أعرفك تنكر سنة

O year, why do I not recognize you rejecting the tradition

وأعيار صوادر عن حماتا

Amidst enlightening thoughts from courageous minds

تعدو الذئاب على من لا كلاب له

Wolves prey upon him who has no dogs,

خيل صيام وخيل غير صائمة

Some horses are fasting, some are not,

فإن يقدر علي أبو قبيس

If Abu Qubays can overcome me,

أبقيت للعبسي فضلاً ونعمة

You have left behind for Al-Abbasi excellence and blessing

كتمتك ليلاً بالجمومين ساهرا

I concealed you at night with tearful eyes, awake

ودع أمامة والتوديع تعذير

Bid farewell to Ummama though parting is but an excuse,

فلن أذكر النعمان إلا بصالح

So I will remember Nu'man only with good,

إذا غضبت لم يشعر الحي أنها

When angered, the living does not feel that she is anger

تخف الأرض إن تفقدك يوماً

The land will grieve if it loses you one day

إني كأني لدى النعمان خبره

It seems as if one of the faithful friends told Nu'man

هذا غلام حسن وجهه

This is a boy with a beautiful face

حذار مدبرة سكاء مقبلة

A sly one, coming and going, thirsty at the water hole

يا دار مية بالعلياء فالسند

O abode of Mayya, amidst the highlands and the sand,

واستبق ودك للصديق ولا تكن

Keep your affection for a friend, and do not

أخلاق مجدك جلت ما لها خطر

Your virtues clearly shine, unparalleled

يوما حليمة كانا من قديمهم

One day Halima were among their ancient ones

حدثوني بني الشقيقة

Tell me, my dear brothers, what can prevent

بالدر والياقوت زين نحرها

With pearls and rubies adorned is her neck

لعمرك ما خشيت على يزيد

By your life! I did not fear for Yazid

قالت بنو عامر خالوا بني أسد

The clan of Aamir said, leave the clan of Asad alone

يقولون حصن ثم تأبى نفوسهم

They say a fortress, yet their souls refuse

إذا أنا لم أنفع خليلي بوده

If I cannot benefit my friend with my love

وعريت من مال وخير جمعته

I am stripped of wealth and good I had amassed

أرسماً جديداً من سعاد تجنب

I draw a new painting of happiness avoiding

كأن قتودي والنسوع جرى بها

As though my riding camels and the yearlings

بانت سعاد وأمسى حبلها انجذما

Her happiness appeared and its rope was severed,

ليهنئ بني ذبيان أن بلادهم

Let the tribe of Dhubyan rejoice that their land

نبئت زرعة والسفاهة كاسمها

I warned Zur'ah though folly is his name

أتاني أبيت اللعن أنك لمتني

You came to reproach and curse me, that I have wronged you,

من يطلب الدهر تدركه مخالبه

Whoever seeks glory, its claws will catch him,

وإن يرجع النعمان نفرح ونبتهج

If Nu'man returns, we will rejoice and be delighted,

غشيت منازلاً بعريتنات

I dwelt in abodes with soft sand around;

لقد قلت للنعمان يوم لقيته

I said to Nu'man when I met him,

نأت بسعاد عنك نوى شظون

I came to you with happy tidings of peace

الطاعن الطعنة يوم الوغى

ظللنا ببرقاء اللهيم تلفنا

لقد نهيت بني ذبيان عن أقر

صل صفاً لا تنطوي من القصر

تعصي الإله وأنت تظهر حبه

دعاك الهوى واستجهلتك المنازل

نفس عصام سودت عصاما

فإن يكن قد قضى من خله وطراً

فإن يك عامر قد قال جهلاً

لعمري لنعم المرء من آل ضجعم

وما حاولتما بقياد خيل

أهاجك من سعداك مغنى المعاهد

بخالة أو ماء الذنابة أو سوى

ألا أبلغا ذبيان عني رسالة

أمن ظلامة الدمن البوالي

ماذا رزئنا به من حية ذكر

لا يبعد الله جيراناً تركتهم

أبلغ بني ذبيان أن لا أخا لهم

ألم أقسم عليك لتخبرني

طلعوا عليك براية معروفة

متى تأته تعشو إلى ضوء ناره
