لا تستري قدري إذا ما طبخته

Do not conceal my fate when you cook it

تداركني جدي بسفح متالع

وعاذلة هبت بليل تلومني

A complainer berated me at night when my mule disappeared on the mount,

ألا أبلغا وهم بن عمرو رسالة

Deliver, O Wahm, unto the sons of 'Amr a message,

أتعرف أطلالاَ ونؤيا مهدم

Do you know ruins and a dream demolished

قدوري بصحراء منصوبة

My kettles are set up in the desert

أتاني من الديان أمس رسالة

A message came to me yesterday from the judge

مهلا نوار أقلي اللوم والعذل

Slow down, bright star, blame me less and reproach me not

لا نطرق الجارات من بعد هجعة

We visit not our neighbors after nightfall

إن كنت كارهة معيشتنا

If you are weary of our life together

ألا أبلغ بني أسد رسول

Shall I send to the sons of Asad a messenger,

وددت وبيت الله لو أن أنفه

I wish, by the House of God, that his nose were but air,

كذلك فصدي إن سألت مطيتي

Thus my steed if you ask has trampled the blood of my insides

أماوي قد طال التجنب والهجر

Amawi, estrangement and avoidance have lasted long

أرى أجأ من وراء الشقيق

Behind the veil, I see an unwed girl

أوقد فإن الليل ليل قر

Kindle the fire, for the night is cold

كريم لا أبيت الليل جاد

Generous am I, I do not refuse the night's hospitality

وقائلة أهلكت في الجود مالنا

And a woman says, "You have squandered our wealth through generosity,

ألا إنني قد هاجني الليلة الذكر

Alas! Tonight memories have stirred me

لعمرك ما أضاع بنو زياد

By your life! The sons of Ziyad have not wasted

لم ينسني أطلال ماوية ناسي

Ruins of a ruined abode did not make me forgetful,

نعما محل الضيف لو تعلمينه

The abode of a guest is blessed, if only you knew it

بكيت وما يبكيك من طلل قفر

You wept, though no abandoned ruins made you weep,

أبلغ الحارث بن عمرو بأني

Convey to Al-Harith ibn 'Amr that I

ومرقبة دون السماء علوته

With a lookout below the heights of heaven

وخرق كنصل السيف قد رام مصدفي

And like the slicing blade, against him I aimed my spear,

ألا أرقت عيني فبت أديره

My eyes could not sleep, so I stayed awake

لما رأيت الناس هرت كلابهم

When I saw the people, their dogs took flight

فلو كان ما يعطي رياء لأمسكت به

If what is given were for ostentation,

وفتيان صدق لا ضغائن بينهم

And true young men without rancor between them

هل الدهر إلا اليوم أو أمس أو غد

Is time anything but today, yesterday, or tomorrow?

ولا أزرف ضيفي إن تأوبني

I do not blame my guest if misfortune visits me,

أرسماً جديداً من نوار تعرف

A new drawing I make of strips for recognition

أما والذي لا يعلم الغيب غيره

By Him who alone knows what is unseen,

وإني لعف الفقر مشترك الغنى

Though poor, I spurn poverty and live nobly,

أيا ابنة عبد الله وابنة مالك

O daughter of Abdullah and daughter of Malik

أبى طول ليلك إلا سهود

The length of your night persisted in worship

أبلغ بني لأم بأن خيولهم

Tell the sons of injustice that their horses

وما من شيمتي شتم ابن عمي

أبا الخيبري وأنت امرؤ

إن امرأ القيس أضحى من صنيعتكم

وإني لأستحيي صحابي أن يرو

ولقد بغى بجلاد أوس قومه

وقائلة أهلكت بالجود مالن

إذا كنت ذا مال كثير موجه

إلههم ربي وربي إلههم

ألا أخلفت سوداء منك المواعد

يا مال إحدى صروف الدهر قد طرقت

فلا الجود يفني المال قبل فنائه

عمرو ابن أوس إذا أشياعه غضبو

ألا سبيل إلى مال يعارضني

فككت عدياَ كلها من إسارها

صحا القلب من سلمى وعن أم عامر

حننت إلى الأجبال أجبال طيئ
