- إن أكن مهديا لك الشعر إنيThough I offer you poetry, I am indeed
- إن يعجز الدهر كفي عن جزائكمIf Fate leaves my hand unable to requite you,
- إني لرحال إذا الهم بركI am indeed a wanderer when sorrow kneels down.
- بكر على غيم أتاك مجدداGo early to a cloud that has come to you anew;
- تناس ذنوب قومك إن حفظ الذForget your people's sins, for remembering the
- حتى إذا السرب انبرى فاجتهداUntil, when the flock sprang forth and strove,
- سعيتم فأدركتم بصالح سعيكمYou strove and succeeded through your worthy efforts;
- سقى الله مصرا خف أهلوه من مصرMay God water a city whose people have departed from it.
- سيبقى فيك ما يهدي لسانيWhat my tongue offers in your praise will endure
- شرف للشريف منك نوالA gift from you is an honor to the nobleman.
- صبغت الرأس ختلا للغوانيI dyed my hair to deceive the fair women,
- عليك ذوي الأقدار فاكسب ثناءهمSeek out men of standing and earn their praise;
- فأحلف حلفة لا أتقيهاSo I swear an oath, without fear
- فإذا غنيت فكلهم لي خاتلSo when I am wealthy, they all deceive me;
- فكيف بشكر ذي نعم إذا ماHow, then, can I thank the giver of blessings, when
- قالوا تمن فقلت القوت في دعةThey asked what I wish for, I said: basic sustenance in a life of ease
- قام ولما يستعن بساقهHe stood, though he had not yet sought support from his leg.
- قوم يسرون ما يولون من حسنA people who conceal the kindness they bestow,
- لا تخافي إن غبت أن تنتاساDo not fear, if you are away, that we will forget
- لا حزن إلا أراه دون ما أجدEvery grief seems to me less than what I feel.
- لعمرك ما يحصى على الكاس شرهاBy your life, the cup's evils cannot be counted,
- لم تزرني أبا عليّ سنو الـI have not been visited, Abu Ali, by years of
- لو خلد الله محلوقا لنجدتهIf God made a shaven man immortal for his valor,
- ليشكر بنو العباس نعمى تجددتLet the sons of Abbas give thanks for a renewed blessing;
- ليهنك ملك بالسعادة طائرهMay you rejoice in a reign whose omen is happiness,
- ما استشرف الناس عيدا مثل عيدهمNever have people looked forward to a festival like theirs,
- ما كنت إلا كلحم ميتYou were merely like carrion,
- نبئت كلبا هاب رميي لهI was told that a dog who feared my pelting him
- وإذا جددت فكل شيء نافعAnd when you are fortunate, everything is beneficial.
- وإن الناس جمعهم كثيرThough people, all together, are many,
- وخصصتني بزيارة أضحى لهاAnd you singled me out with a visit through which
- وكم لك نائلا لم أحتسبهAnd how many a gift of yours I did not expect,
- ولقد بررت الطالبية بعدماIndeed, you treated the Talibids well, after
- وما كنتَ ممن أدرك المُلكَ بالمُنىNor were you among those who attained kingship through wishes,
- ومن ذا الذي ترضى سجاياه كلهاAnd who is there whose every trait you approve of?
- وهبتم لنا يا آل وهب مودةYou bestowed affection on us, O House of Wahb,
- يا أبا القاسم يا منO Abu al-Qasim, O you
- يقول ذوو التشؤم ما لقيناThe pessimists said, "We did not meet
