أظنّI think الشامSyria تشمتgloats بالعراقِover Iraq
أظنّ الشام تشمت بالعراقِ
إذاwhen عزمَresolves الإمامُthe imam علىon انطلاقdeparture
إذا عزمَ الإمامُ على انطلاق
I think Syria gloats over Iraq
I believe Damascus rejoiced at Iraq’s plight
when the imam resolves to depart.
When the Imam was determined to depart
يقولsays محمدMuhammad تفديكmay ransom you نفسيmy soul
يقول محمد تفديك نفسي
أماwill you not تبقيshow mercy عليّon me منfrom الفراقِparting
أما تبقي عليّ من الفراقِ
Muhammad says, “May my soul ransom you!
Mohammed says I sacrifice myself for you
Will you not spare me the parting?
Will you not spare me from this separation?
فإنfor if تدعِyou leave العراقَIraq وساكنيهاand its inhabitants
فإن تدعِ العراقَ وساكنيها
فقدthen perhaps تبلىbe afflicted المليحةthe beautiful woman بالطلاقwith divorce
فقد تبلى المليحة بالطلاق
For if you leave Iraq and its inhabitants,
If you abandon Iraq and its dwellers
then even a beautiful woman may suffer divorce.”
The beautiful one is divorced by the parting
