I was told that a dog who feared my pelting him
I was told you're a dog who flees my throwing,
barks at me from a distant place.
Barking at me from a faraway place,

لو بنت للسامع والرائي
If you amounted to anything, we would lampoon you—or
If I had ever slighted you in some way
if you were discernible to the listener and the onlooker.
Or done wrong in sight of watcher and witness,

So desist from reviling me, for I am a man
Then stop insulting me, for I'm a man
made forbearing by the scarcity of my equals.
Whose patience was taught by lack of peers.
