إن أكن مهدياً لك الشعر إنّي
لابنsurely a son of بيتٍa house تهدىare offered as gifts لهto it الأشعارُthe poems
لابن بيتٍ تهدى له الأشعارُ
Though I offer you poetry, I am indeed
If I am a guide for you in poetry, I am
A son of a house to which poems are offered.
A son of a house for whom poetry is guided
غيرَhowever أنّيthat I أراكI see you منamong أهلthe people of بيتa house
غيرَ أنّي أراك من أهل بيت
ماnot علىupon الحرّthe free man أنthat يسودوهthey rule over him عارُa disgrace
ما على الحرّ أن يسودوه عارُ
Yet I see you belong to a house—
Except I see you are from a house
It is no disgrace for a free man to have them as his lords.
For the free man, shame is not to be dyed
