Will someone convey on my behalf to the emir Muhammad
O messenger, convey to me from the prince Muhammad
A message of outstanding merit above other speech?
A message - his words have merit over others
لناwe have حاجةٌa need إنif أمكنتكَit is within your power قضيتَهاyou fulfill it
وإنand if هيit لمnot تمكنbe possible فعذرُكthen your excuse واسعُample
We have a need; if it is within your power, you will fulfill it.
We have a need, if you can fulfill it
And if it is not possible, your excuse is ample.
And if not, your excuse is sufficient
وأنتand you وإنتand if (apparently intended as وإن) كنتyou are الجوادَthe generous one بعينهhimself
فلستَso you are not بمُعطيone who gives الناسيthe forgetful one ماwhat اللَهGod مانعُwithholds
And you, even if you are generosity itself,
You are generous indeed
Cannot give the forgetful one what God withholds.
But you cannot give what God has prevented
فإنfor if يورِkindles زندfire-stick الطاهرينَof the Tahirs فبالحرىthen fittingly
وإلّاand if not فقدthen sometimes تنبوglance off السيوفُthe swords القواطعُkeen-edged
For if the Tahirs’ fire-stick kindles, that is only fitting;
If He facilitates the pure hearts' desires - excellent
And if not, even keen-edged swords sometimes glance off.
Otherwise, the cutting swords are ready
