Aish, I see not your people losing composure
بانت سعاد فنوم العين مملول
Happiness appeared, so the eyes fell asleep,
كأنها وقد براها الأخماس
As if they had been picked out by the wild roebuck,
صفوح بخديها وقد طال جريها
Roses on her cheeks, though long in growing
ألا من مبلغ خاقان عني
O messenger to the Khan, hear me:
وأعجلنا وشك الفراق وبيننا
And we hastened, though parting was near,
تمشي مباذلها الفرند وهبرر
Her friends stride by, frank and free
ذاك مما لقين من دلج الليل
I see the night's darkness as a veil
إنك يا ابن جعفر نعم الفتى
O son of Ja'far, you are a noble youth
كأن هزيز الريح بين فروجه
As if the rustling of the wind between its branches
قد تبطنت بهلواعة
I have concealed myself in infectious absurdity
لنا صاحب قد خان من أجل نظرة
We have a friend who betrayed us for a glance
أتعرف رسما دارسا قد تغيرا
Do you know of a drawing that has changed
عفت ذروة من أهلها فجفيرها
A peak of its people departed, so its torrent subsided
راحت يقحمها ذو أزمل وسقت

يأوي إذا كشحت إلى أطبائها

صدع الظعائن قلبه المشتاقا
The longing has split his lovelorn heart
وكم وزعنا من خميس جحفل
How many a foe in his black tent we've quelled
وأطرق إطراق الشجاع وقد جرى
And he bowed his head down, bow of the valiant, when
لما رأتنا واقفي المطيات
When she saw us halting the camels
قالت سليمى لست بالحادي المدل
Sulaima said, "You are not a guide
قالت ألا يدعى لهذا عراف

لعلك والموعود حق لقاؤه

خليل خود غرها شبابه
A self-conceited youth, his youthfulness deceived him,
فأظهر ودا والعداوة سره
He showed affection while enmity was his secret
من اللواتي إذا لانت عريكتها
She is one whose tent ropes, if pitched,
كأني كسوت الرحل جونا رباعيا
As though I had saddled the camel a sturdy mount,
تزور امرءا يعطى على الحمد ماله
You visit a man who is given his wealth for praise
إذا ما راية رفعت لمجد
When the flag is raised in glory
وكنت إذا ما جئت ليلى تبرقعت
Whenever I came to Layla, she was veiled,
يحيل به الذئب الأحل وقوته
With it the most brilliant wolf makes lawful
وإن على الإوانة من عقيل
And indeed upon allegiance from 'Uqail
ما قطعت من أمم ولا دان
They have crossed neither nation nor land,
طاف خيال من سليمى فاعترى
A vision from Sulaima passed by and lingered,
وأحمى عليها ابنا يزيد بن مسهر
And Ibn Yazeed bin Musheer protected it
كلا يومي طوالة وصل أروى
My days are prolonged in yearning for the quenching of Arwa
رأيت وقد أتى نجران دوني

وحرف قد بعثت على وجاها

أريغوني إراغتكم فإني

نظرت وسهب من بوانة بيننا
ماذا يهيجك من ذكر ابنة الراقي
إذا تعلو براكبها خليجا
لا يطبيني العمل المقذي
ألا ناديا أظعان ليلى تعرج
تعارض أسماء الركاب عشية
طال الثواء على رسم بيمئود
عفا بطن قو من سليمى فعالز
لمن طلل عاف ورسم منازل
أمن دمنتين عرج الركب فيهما
طيف خيال من سليمى هائجي
فصوبته كأنه صوب غبية
بادت وغير آيهن مع البلى
ولقد قطعت الخرق تحمل نمرقي
أواعدتني مالا أحاول نفعه
وعدت وكان الخلف منك سجية
كأن المتن والشرخين منه
وقد لاح في الصبح الثريا لمن رأى
تقولها ناكحة أويسا
جزى الله خيرا من أمير وباركت
ألا إنما الداء العياء مرامنا
لعمري لا أنسى وإن طال عهدنا
أرسل يوما ديمة تهتانا
يثقب نارها والليل داج
