1. A self-conceited youth, his youthfulness deceived him,
She was captivated when his first down sprouted.
١. خَليلُ خَودٍ غَرَّها شَبابُه
أَعجَبَها إِذ لَبِنَت رُبابُه
2. Passions surged in him while his beard grew,
If only his companions had told her,
٢. وَرائِبٌ جاشَت بِهِ وِطابُه
يا لَيتَها أَخبَرَها أَصحابُه
3. About him, a truthful, eloquent account,
That his spittle keeps dripping while he sleeps,
٣. عَنهُ حَديثاً صادِقاً صُيّابُه
إِذ لا يَزالُ نائِساً لُعابُه
4. His clothes are patched up as he rushes to leave,
Tattered are his clothes, ripped up and torn.
٤. يُعجِلُ حَلَّ رَحلِهِ اِنكِبابُه
طَحطَحَهُ مُنخَرِقٌ أَثوابُه
5. Powerless are his fangs against sweetmeats,
Fearful of gardens is his startled steed,
٥. بِالطَلَوانِ عاجِزاً أَنيابُه
رَوعُ الجَنانِ عَجِلٌ إِقتابُه
6. Whose saddle drums out a yellowish squeak
Whenever he whinnies, it's just a rebuke,
٦. يُزجي مَطايا صُفراً أَقصابُه
إِذا وَنَينَ إِنَّما عِتابُه
7. And the jingle of departure then starts to recede.
٧. وَشكُ الرَحيلِ ثُمَّتَ اِنسِلابُه
