بزينب المم قبل ان يرحل الركب

With Zaynab bid farewell before the caravan departs

وقالت بالغدير غدير خم

At Ghadir Khum she said:

اقفر من آل سعدى الكثيب

Home of the Sa'd tribe is the barren dune

ويوم ذي سلم شاقتك نائحة

Where once my soul found peace in your embrace

ولكنني فاديت امي بعدما

But I ransomed my mother after

ومن هويت اذا جاوزن ذا عبب

Who but you have I when sorrows past endure,

إني لاكره ما كرهت من الذي

Roses are red, violets are blue

عفا بعد سعدى ذو مراح فاقتد

The one of happy fortunes passed away after my bliss

تقيمه تارة وتقعده

You make him stand at times, and seat him down

كسدن من الفقر في بيتهن

They are in poverty at their homes

تربعت في مسيات فذي بقر

I sat in the evening in a land of cows

نعم وبذي المسروح فوق سويقة

Yes, by the one of flowing locks above the water-skin strap,

فلا شك ان الحي ادنى مقيلهم

There is no doubt that life is the abode of their downward path

فظل لها لدن من الاثل مورق

So it has remained from ancient times, flourishing,

اللبين يا ليلى جمالك ترحل

The night draws on, O Layla, your beauty departs

أضر بها التهجير حتى

Exile has so afflicted her

إن الخليط اجدوا البين فارتحلوا

Roam far and wide to find the remedy

بدأن بنا وابن الليالي كأنه

They began with us, yet the nights' son

تنادى آل زينب باحتمال

The family of Zainab called for endurance

ألا تسأل الخيمات من بطن أرثد

Where the tents were pitched long ago

لقد هتفت في جنح ليل حمامة

In the wings of night a dove cried out

وقفت لها كيما تمر لعلني

I stood before her that she might pass; perchance

بذي الماثول من ودان تسفي

With flowing robes in Waddan’s valley glide

طرقتك صائدة القلوب وليس ذا

I have come to you, hunter of hearts, though this

كأني سننت الحب أول عاشق

As if I were the first lover among mankind

خليلي زورا العامرية فانظروا

My friends, visit Al-Amiriyya and see

الحمد لله جاءت النعم

Praise be to God, blessings have arrived

فاضحت بروضات الستار يحوزها

The garden revealed behind the veil, possessed

اذا البيض لا يأتين في الحب رقة

If white eggs fail to come with tenderness of love,

ما جاوزت ناقتي حفلا ولا سلكت

My she-camel has passed by no caravan, nor trodden

فهل تعودن ليالينا بذي سلم

Will our nights return to the ladder's base,

أصاب دواء علتك الطبيب

The doctor found the cure for your ailment

أرى الناس من ليلاك سقما وقربها

I see the people sick from your absence, and their nearness

والله ما يدري امروء ذو جنابه

None knows, man of dignity and grace

طلعن علينا بين مروة والصفا

They come upon us between Marwa and Safa

يعل بنيه المحض من بكراتها

He makes his pure beverage from the first dripping of the udder,

الا راع قلبي من سلامه ان غدا

Alas my heart is troubled over his peacefulness if tomorrow

تيممن منها ذاهبات كأنهم

As though they were ships, sailing away,

فلو كانوا اذ بانوا يئست فلم يكن

Had they when they despaired not hoped again,

أضر بها التهجير حتى كأنها

Exile has so afflicted her that she seems

جعلن ذو رؤوء البرق برق عنيزة

The one with lightning vision made lightning of Unaiza

وقد عاد ماء البحر ملحا فزادني

The sea's water has turned salty, adding

أحب قنا من حب هند ولم أكن

I loved Qana more than the love of Hind, and I did not care

لعلك باك ان تغنت حمامة

Perhaps you cried when a dove sang

لعمري على فوت لاية نظرة

By my life, a glance is lost upon the demise

بكيت ابن ليلى وابنه ورأيتني

I wept for Layla's son and his son when you saw me

عفا الحب الاعلى فروض الاجاول

The sublime love has absolved the duties of time

دعون الهوى ثم ارتمين قلوبنا

We let passion take over, then our hearts were shot

عفا الجرف ممن حله فأجاوله

The cliff forgave those who descended it, so I descended

أصبت يوم الصعيد من سكر

I was stricken on the day of al-Sa'id with intoxication

قفا أخوي إن الدار ليست

Stand still, my brother, for this abode is not

وكان يقودني كلف بسعدى

He used to lead me wherever my bliss took me

أراك طموح العين ميالة الهوى

I see you are the desire of my eyes, the inclination of my passion

سرى من سواد الليل ينزل خلفه

He walked away from the blackness of the night behind him

من النفر البيض الذين اذا انتجوا

From the noble white people whose eloquence

وبين الصفا والمروتين ذكرتكم

I remembered you between Safa and Marwah

ونبه شوقي بعدما كنت نائما

And Shauqi was awoken after I had been asleep

ألا ليت شعري ما الذي تحدثين بي

Oh would that I knew what she will talk to me

ولولا ان يقال صبا نصيب

And were it not for fear it would be said, "He is love smitten in youth,"

ألا إن ليلى العامرية أصبحت

Behold, my Layla al-Amiriya has come

ليس السواد ناقصي ما دام لي

Blackness is no defect as long as I have

سمعت بذكر الناس هندا فلم ازل

I heard people speak of India, so I kept going,

نظرت إليها نظرة وهي عاتق

I looked at her once when she turned away

الا هل من البين المفرق من بد

Alas, is there any clearer separation than the separation of death?

وإني لاستحيي كثيرا واتقي

I am often shy and fearful,

أتصبر عن سعدى وأنت صبور

Shall I be patient for Sa'di when you are patient,

ألا يا عقاب الوكر وكر ضرية

O eagle in your lair, lair on a rugged hill,

فلا النفس ملتها ولا العين تنتهي

The soul finds no rest from thoughts of you

تأوني طيف الخيال المؤرق

The specter of imagination disturbs me at night

فما زال بردي طيبا من ثيابها

So my robe still kept the scent of her garments

فان تصلي اصلك وان تعودي

Whether you maintain our bond or sever it

ولقد علمت ولست تجهله

يقول فيحسن القول ابن ليلى

إذا المال لم يوجب عليك عطاءه

If wealth imposes not on you to give

وقد كانت الايام اذ نحن باللوى

The days when we were together in the meadows

كأن القلب ليلة قبل يغدي

As if the heart the night before were to spend

اصدت غداة الجزع ذي الطلح زينب

Zainab cried bitterly at dawn,

فما أنا الا مثل سيقة العدا

I walk behind the pack, just like a camel at the rear

ويوم اللوى ابكاك نوح حمامة

On the day of parting, the dove wept like Noah,

ألا حي قبل البين أم حبيب

Oh the living before the separation, or the beloved!

وان هواها في فؤادي لقرحة

And if her love within my heart is a wound

لا أنساك ما ارسى ثبير مكانه

I will not forget you as long as Sirius remains in its place,

أرق المحب وعاده سهده

The lover's wakefulness returned to him,

أمعارف الدمن القفار توهم

The deserted ruins deluded my acquaintances,

ومضمر الكشح يطويه الضجيع به

With a treasure of munificence he enriches the needy

أهيم بدعد ما حييت فإن امت

I yearn for Da'd as long as I live, and if I die,

فيا لك من ليل تمتعت طوله

O what a night whose length you enjoyed

سرى الهم تثنيني إليك طلائعه

The anxiety crept toward me, its harbingers in Egypt and Al-Huf haunted me,

كأن اولى الحاجات لما بدا لهم

As if the first of needs when it appeared to them

ابا مروان لست بخارجي

O Abaa Marwan, you are not a stranger to me

وما في الأرض أشقى من محب

Nothing on earth is more wretched than a lover,

أقول وليلتي تزداد طولا

I say, and my night grows longer

أفي قلائص جرب كن من عمل

In the worn cloak of deprivation act with integrity

إليك صحيفة نشرت حديثا

Rich in nonsense, lacking eloquence

أهاج البكا ربع باسفل ذي السدر

The weeping excites a quarter of Dhi As-Sidr

دعا المحرمون الله يستغفرونه

The pilgrims called on Allah, begging His forgiveness

وإني وإياهم كساع لقاعد

And I and they are like an hourglass with its walker,

عفا سرب الحبل الدميت المحلل

The rope's collar has been loosened, the knot untied,

أيا بعل ليلى كيف تجمع سلمها

ونزور سيدنا وسيد غيرنا

فجرى ومناني ثلاثة اشهر

لعبد العزيز على قومه

إذا ما بساط اللهو مد وقربت

سقى أهل مثوانا ببيسان وابل

لقد امست بترنوط قبور

جزى الله أيام الفراق ملامة

لأني لاخشى من قلاص ابن محرز

روح الفتى رأس ماله فإذا

فإن أك حالكا فالمسك أحوى

ألا أيها الربع المقيم بعنبب

وإن وراء ظهري يا ابن ليلى

عفا منقل من اهله فنقيب

من ذا ابن ليلى جزاك الله مغفرة

وقد كان من أيامنا بسويقه

عفا واسط من اهله فالضوارب

تجنبت ليلى حين لج بك الهوى

وعن شمائلهم انقاء اسنمة

وليس يزري السواد يوما بذي

ألا لا يغرن أمرأ من تلاده

أجارتنا في الحج ايام انتم

أيا دهر ما هذا لنا منك مرة

نفضت عليهن من جلدتي

نسية شحشاح غيور يهبنه

بيثرب او وادي قناة يليح

إليك أبا حفص تعسفت الفلا

وقد هاجني للشوق نوح حمامة

عرفت وجربت الامور فما ارى

يابن الهشامين لا بيت كبيتكم

الام على ليلى ولو استطيعها

لعمري لئن امسيت بالفرش مقعدا

خليلي ان حلت كلية بالربا

فبينا نحن ننظره أتانا

ونحن منعنا يوم أول نساءنا

هتوف الضحى ورقاء يذكرك الهوى

ولا إنني ناسيك بالليل ما بكت

لعمرك إن البيت بالقبل الذي

كسيت ولم املك سوادا وتحته

حلت بساقا والبطاح فلم ترم

أمن ذكر ليلى قد تعاودني التبل

ومن حب سلمى راشح ليس بارحي

يومان يوم لزريق فسل

لقد كدت تبكي ان تغنت حمامة

يا بشر يابن الجعفرية ما

اني اراني لسحيم قائلا

ايقظان ام هب الفؤاد لطائف

ولقد كاد مغنى دار سعدى باظلما

وقد أيقنت ان ستبين ليلى
