1. I see the people sick from your absence, and their nearness
Is like shyness, as the thirsty awaiting rain.
١. أرى الناسَ من لَيلاكَ سَقما وَقُربها
حياءَ كما الغَيث الَّذي انتَ ناظِرُه
2. If you asked the thundering clouds for people one day,
They would pour down their overflowing showers.
٢. وَلَو سَأَلتَ لِلنّاسِ يَوماً بِوَجهِها
سَحاب الثُريّا لاِستَهَلت مَواطره
3. He who keeps property and defends it from loss
Neither time will keep it, nor excessive stinginess.
٣. وَمن يَبق مالاً عدة وَصِيانَه
فَلا الدَهر مبقيه وَلا الشح وافِرُه
4. And he who bears the great cross of hope
To break the rod of fate, fate will break him.
٤. وَمن يَكُ ذا عظم صَليب رجا بِهِ
لِيَكسِرَ عود الدَهر فَالدَهر كاسِرُه
