1. O eagle in your lair, lair on a rugged hill,
You've watered the valleys from eagle and from lair,
2. I saw you among birds flying above,
With a beak amid maidens and dispersal,
3. Nights and months pass and I do not see,
Passing of nights makes me forget, daughter of vine,
4. You say "We prayed and estranged," and you can see,
If you estrange, only union comes with estrangement,
5. So I did not accept what she said or showed anger,
My chest tightened with what she mumbled of her love,
6. I lingered with my love, reciting my virginity,
And I have over her no trickery or virginity,
7. The shepherds recite only a pretext,
For the wide-fanged, sweet dispersal,
8. The shepherds said, "Why do you mix with us?"
I said "Yes, I was thinking of her,"
9. They reminded me of the hill, reconciling,
A cousin transgressed, or a cousin of sons and innocence,
10. So a group of people when I recited to them,
Said "Good!" and a group, "God forbid, we don't know,"
11. But by Him who circumambulated the filled house,
And knew the days of sacrifice and immolation,
12. She increased my love for the vine and her family,
Nights she spent at the vine,
13. He called farewell when we were in fear from Mina,
So it stirred the agonies of my heart, though it did not know,
14. He called another's name instead of Layla, so it was as if,
A bird that was in my chest took flight,
15. So what do you think, my friend, if you mention her,
And make my companions restless for her on the night of departure,
16. And calm the boredom and hatred in me,
And the leaning and scattering of the camels,
