تنكر بعدي من أميمة صائف
After me, the autumn wind disguised itself
أطعنا ربنا وعصاه قوم
We obeyed our Lord while a people disobeyed Him
ألمً خيال موهِناً من تُماضرا
A vision brought me low from Tumadhir
لليلى بأعلى ذي معارك منزلُ
To Layla, in the highest abode with conflict
ورثنا المجد عن آباء صدق
We inherited glory from fathers of integrity
هل عاجل من متاع الحي منظور
Is there any hope to obtain the goods of the living that I see,
نحن بنو عمر بن بكر بن وائل
We are the sons of Omar son of Bakr son of Wael
وفدت أمي وما قد ولدت
My mother has offered me as ransom
وما كان وقافاً إذا الخيل أحجمت

فيا راكباً إما عرضت فبلغن
O rider, if you pass by the dwellers of Kāhil,
أيتها النفس أجملي جزعا
O soul, adorn yourself with patience,
يبصبصن بالأذناب حول لبانه
They wag their tails around his milk,
حتى إذا رقد تنكب عنهما

عيني لا بد من سكب وتهمال
My eyes must shed copious tears
أجاعلة أم الحصين خزاية

حسبتم ولد البرشاء قاطبة

عددت رجالاً من قُعين تفجسا
You counted men from Quayn as spies
أبني لبينى لستم بيد

علي ألية عتقت قديماً

زعمتم أن غولا والرجام لكم
You claimed you had power and missiles for yourselves
طلس العشاء إذا ما جن ليلهم
When their night spreads its gown
نبئت أن دماً حراماً نلته
I'm told you gained blood that was forbidden
نبئت أن بني جديلة أوعبوا
I was told that the clan of Jada'ilah sent
وباللات والعزى ومن دان دينها
By al-Lat and al-Uzza, and she whose faith they share,
أبا دليجة من لحي مفرد
O Abaa Duleijah, protector of the solitary bearded one,
وكائن يُرى من عاجز متضعف
A weak and helpless creature, as sometimes seen,
ألم تكسف الشمس والبدر والكواكبُ
Did not the sun, moon, and stars darken
يا عين جودي على عمرو بن مسعود
O my eyes, be generous to Amr ibn Mas'ud
إذا ناقة شدت برحل ونمرقٍ
When a she-camel is saddled with a howdah and saddle-cloth
غني تآوى بأولادها
The rich complain about their children
لعمرُك ما ملت ثواء ثويَّها
By your life, she did not neglect the comfort of her baby
لعمرك ما آسى طفيل بن مالك
By your life, Tufail ibn Malik
فإن تنكحي ماوية الخير حاتماً
فما أم الردين وإن أدلت
كان بنو الأبرص أقرانكم
فإن يأتكم مني هجاء فإنما
وما عدلت نفسي بنفسك سيداً
خُذلت على ليلة ساهره
صحا قلبه عن سُكره فتأملا
سائل بها مولاك قيس بن عاصم
لعمرك ما تدعو ربيعة باسمنا
بكرت أمية غدوة برهين
أضرت بها الحاجات حتى كأنها
ألم تر أن الله أنزل مُزنةً
لا تأمنوا آراءه وظنونه
أتاني ابن عبد الله قرط أخصه
صبوت وهل تصبو ورأسك أشيب
حلًت تماضر بعدنا رببا
