- أبكى العيون وأذرى دمعها درراًEyes were made to weep, their tears scattered like pearls,
- أبني طالب إن شيخك ناصحO my dear son Talib, your old father is indeed a sincere adviser.
- أتعلم ملك الحبش أن محمداًDo you know, O king of the Abyssinians, that Muhammad
- إذا اجتمعت يوماً قريش لمفخرIf Quraysh one day gathers to boast,
- إذا قيل من خير هذا الورىIf asked, “Who is the best of these people
- أرقت ودمع العين في العين غائرI lay sleepless, the eye's tears sunk deep within the eye,
- أرقت وقد تصوبت النجومI lay sleepless as the stars descended,
- أسبلت عبرة على الوجناتA tear streamed down the cheeks,
- إصبرن يا بني فالصبر أحجىBe patient, my dear son, for patience is wiser.
- إعلم أبا أروى بأنك ماجدKnow, Abu Arwa, that you are noble,
- أفيقوا بني غالب وانتهواCome to your senses, sons of Ghalib, and desist
- ألا أبلغ قريشاً حيث حلتHear now: tell Quraysh, wherever they dwell,
- ألا أبلغا عني على ذات بينناHearken, you two: convey on my behalf, in view of the bond between us,
- ألا أبلغا عني لؤيا رسالةHear now: you two, convey from me to Lu'ayy a message,
- ألا إن خير الناس حياً وميتاًBehold, indeed the best of people, in life and in death,
- ألا ليت حظي من حياطة نصركمAlas! Would that I had enjoyed the protection of your victory
- ألا ليت شعري كيف في النأي جعفرAh, would that I knew how Ja‘far fares far away,
- ألا من لهم آخر الليل معتمAh, who can ease a dark sorrow at night's end?
- ألا من لهم آخر الليل منصبAh, who will tend to a wearisome sorrow at night's end,
- ألا هل أتى بحرينا صنع ربناLo, has our Lord's deed reached our people across the sea,
- الحمد لله الذي قد شرفاPraise be to God, who has honored
- ألم ترني من بعد هم هممتهDid you not see me, after a resolve I had formed,
- أمن أجل حبل ذي رمام علوتهWas it over a frayed rope that you struck him
- أمن تذكر دهر غير مأمونIs it from recalling an age not to be trusted
- إن الأمين محمداً في قومهIndeed, the trusted one Muhammad among his people
- إن الوثيقة في لزوم محمدIndeed, security lies in cleaving to Muhammad;
- إن علياً وجعفراً ثقتيIndeed, Ali and Ja‘far are my trusted support
- أنت الرسول رسول الله نعلمهYou are the Messenger, the Messenger of God—we know it.
- أنت النبي محمدYou are the Prophet Muhammad,
- أوصي بنصر النبي الخير مشهدهI urge the support of the best Prophet's vision
- أيا أخوينا عبد شمس ونوفلاO our two brothers, ʿAbd Shams and Nawfal!
- بكى طرباً لما رآني محمدMuhammad wept with emotion when he saw me,
- بكيت أخا لأواء يحمد يومهI wept for a companion of hardship, whose day is praised,
- تطاول ليلي بهم وصبMy night has grown long with unrelenting care,
- تقول ابنتي أين أين الرحيلMy daughter says, “Where, where are you bound?”
- حتى متى نحن على فترةHow long shall we remain in inaction,
- خليلي ما أذني لأول عاذلMy two friends, my ear does not heed the first reproacher,
- سقى الله رهطا هم بالحجونMay God water a band of men who are at al-Hajun,
- سميته بعلي كي يدوم لهI named him Ali so that there might endure for him
- صبراً أبا يعلى على دين أحمدBe steadfast, Abu Ya‘la, in the faith of Ahmad.
- عجبت لحلم يا ابن شيبة عازبI marvel, O son of Shaybah, at judgment gone astray,
- عين ائذني ببكاء آخر الأبدO eye, give leave for weeping till the end of time,
- فقدنا عميد الحي فالركن خاشعWe have lost the pillar of the clan, so the pillar is grieving
- فما رجعوا حتى رأوا من محمدSo they did not return until they had witnessed Muhammad's
- قل لعبد العزى أخي وشقيقيTell ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, my brother and full brother,
- قل لمن كان من كنانة في العزSay to those of Kinanah who are held in honor,
- لا يمنعنك من حق تقوم بهNever be deterred from a right you uphold
- لقد أكرم الله النبي محمداًIndeed, God has honored the Prophet Muhammad.
- لمن أربع أقوين بين القدائمWhose are the dwellings that lie deserted among al-Qada'im?
- ليت شعري مسافر بن أبي عمـروWould that I knew, Musāfir son of Abū ʿAmr—
- محمد تفد نفسك كل نفسMuhammad, may every soul ransom yours,
- مليك الناس ليس له شريكThe Sovereign of humankind has no partner.
- منعنا أرضنا من كل حيWe defended our land against every tribe,
- منعنا الرسول رسول المليكWe protected the Messenger, the Messenger of the Sovereign,
- والله لن يصلوا إليك بجمعهمBy God, they will not reach you with all their host
- وإن امرءا أبو عتيبة عمهAnd indeed, a man whose uncle is Abu Utaybah
- وخالي هشام بن المغيرة ثاقبAnd my maternal uncle Hisham ibn al-Mughira is keen,
- وعربة دار لا يحل حرامهاAnd ʿArabah is an abode whose sanctity none violates
- وما كنت أخشى أن يرى الذل فيكمNever did I fear that humiliation would be seen among you—
- يقولون لي دع نصر من جاء بالهدىThey say to me: Stop supporting the one who came with guidance,
