أَرِقت وَقَد تَصَوَّبتِ النُجومُ

أَرِقت وَقَد تَصَوَّبتِ النُجومُ

وَبِتّ وَما تُسالِمُكَ الهُمومُ

وَبِتّ وَما تُسالِمُكَ الهُمومُ

I lay sleepless as the stars descended,

I lost sleep as the stars took aim

And passed the night, while cares gave you no peace,

And stayed awake with worries untamed

لِظُلمِ عَشيرَةٍ ظَلموا وَعَقّوا

لِظُلمِ عَشيرَةٍ ظَلموا وَعَقّوا

وَغِبُّ عُقوقِهِم كُلَأٌ وَخيمُ

وَغِبُّ عُقوقِهِم كُلَأٌ وَخيمُ

For a clan's injustice: they did wrong and broke kinship bonds.

For the injustice of a folk so cruel

And the outcome of their disloyalty is unwholesome pasture.

Their disloyalty festers, their hearts so foul

هُمُ اِنتَهَكوا المَحارِمَ مِن أَخيهِم

هُمُ اِنتَهَكوا المَحارِمَ مِن أَخيهِم

وَلَيسَ لَهُم بِغَيرِ أَخٍ حَريمُ

وَلَيسَ لَهُم بِغَيرِ أَخٍ حَريمُ

They violated their brother's sacred rights,

Defiling the sacred bonds to their own brother

Yet without a brother they have no sanctuary.

No code bars them, no creed can deter

إِلى الرَحمَنِ وَالكَرَمِ اِستَذَمّوا

إِلى الرَحمَنِ وَالكَرَمِ اِستَذَمّوا

وَكُلُّ فعالِهِم دَنِسٌ ذَميمُ

وَكُلُّ فعالِهِم دَنِسٌ ذَميمُ

They incurred blame before the Most Merciful and nobility,

Begging God's mercy and bountiful grace

And all their deeds are filthy and blameworthy.

While committing vile acts that shame and debase

بَنو تَيمٍ تُؤازِرُها هُصيصٌ

بَنو تَيمٍ تُؤازِرُها هُصيصٌ

وَمَخزومٌ لَها منّا قَسيمُ

وَمَخزومٌ لَها منّا قَسيمُ

The sons of Taym are supported by Husays,

Banu Taym and their Hudhayl allies

And Makhzum, from among us, is their partner.

With us Makhzoom, their fortunes now tied

فَلا تَنهى غُواةَ بَني هُصيصٍ

فَلا تَنهى غُواةَ بَني هُصيصٍ

بَنو تَيمٍ وَكُلُّهُمُ عَديمُ

بَنو تَيمٍ وَكُلُّهُمُ عَديمُ

So the wayward sons of Husays are not restrained

Do not curb Hudhayl or their brazen warriors

By the sons of Taym, and all of them are wanting.

Mischief's their way, to goodness they're strangers

وَمَخزومٌ أَقَلُّ القَومِ حِلماً

وَمَخزومٌ أَقَلُّ القَومِ حِلماً

إِذا طاشَت مِن الوَرَهِ الحُلومُ

إِذا طاشَت مِن الوَرَهِ الحُلومُ

And Makhzum is the least forbearing of the people,

Makhzoom, least wise when rage is unfurled

When minds reel from folly.

Sanity lost in their world

أَطاعوا اِبنَ المُغيرَةِ وَاِبنَ حَربٍ

أَطاعوا اِبنَ المُغيرَةِ وَاِبنَ حَربٍ

كِلا الرَجُلَينِ مُتَّهمٌ مُليمُ

كِلا الرَجُلَينِ مُتَّهمٌ مُليمُ

They obeyed the son of al-Mughira and the son of Harb;

Heeding Mughira's son and Ibn Harb's decree

Both men are suspect and blameworthy.

Slanderous men, their souls sullied with infamy

وَقالوا خُطَّةً جَوراً وَحُمقاً

وَقالوا خُطَّةً جَوراً وَحُمقاً

وَبَعضُ القَولِ أَبلَجُ مُستَقيمُ

وَبَعضُ القَولِ أَبلَجُ مُستَقيمُ

And they proposed a scheme of injustice and folly,

Spewing their lies, their injustice and folly

Yet some speech is clear and upright.

Some words still earnest, though muddied wholly

فَمَهلاً قَومَنا لا تَركَبونا

فَمَهلاً قَومَنا لا تَركَبونا

بِمَظلَمَةٍ لَها أَمرٌ عَظيمُ

بِمَظلَمَةٍ لَها أَمرٌ عَظيمُ

So hold back, our people; do not assail us

Kinsmen, pause, do not force this ascent

With a wrong whose consequences are grave,

That will lead but to ruin and deep discontent

فَيَندَمَ بَعضُكُم وَيَذِلَّ بَعضٌ

فَيَندَمَ بَعضُكُم وَيَذِلَّ بَعضٌ

وَلَيسَ بِمُفلِحٍ أَبَداً ظَلومُ

وَلَيسَ بِمُفلِحٍ أَبَداً ظَلومُ

Lest some of you regret it and others be humbled.

Some will be shamed, some humbled that day

And no oppressor ever prospers.

No oppressor thrives, that is Virtue's way

فَلا وَالراقِصاتِ بِكُلِّ خَرقٍ

فَلا وَالراقِصاتِ بِكُلِّ خَرقٍ

إِلى مَعمورِ مَكَّةَ لا نريمُ

إِلى مَعمورِ مَكَّةَ لا نريمُ

No! By the dancing she-camels across every desert waste,

By the whirling pilgrims, this oath we avow

Toward Mecca's much-frequented House, we shall not budge

We'll never set foot in Mecca's valley now

طَوالَ الدَهرِ حَتّى تَقتُلونا

طَوالَ الدَهرِ حَتّى تَقتُلونا

وَنَقتُلَكُم وَتَلتَقِيَ الخُصومُ

وَنَقتُلَكُم وَتَلتَقِيَ الخُصومُ

For all time, until you kill us,

Till you strike us down or we strike the same

And we kill you, and the adversaries meet,

And witness the reckoning that Fortune will claim

وَيُصرعَ حَولَهُ مِنّا رِجالٌ

وَيُصرعَ حَولَهُ مِنّا رِجالٌ

وَتَمنَعهُ الخُؤولَةُ وَالعُمومُ

وَتَمنَعهُ الخُؤولَةُ وَالعُمومُ

And men of ours are struck down around him,

Men will fall around us, felled in the fray

And his maternal and paternal uncles protect him,

As warriors retreat and innocents pay

وَيَعلَمَ مَعشَرٌ ظَلموا وَعَقّوا

وَيَعلَمَ مَعشَرٌ ظَلموا وَعَقّوا

بِأَنَّهُمُ هُمُ الخَدُّ اللَطيمُ

بِأَنَّهُمُ هُمُ الخَدُّ اللَطيمُ

And a people who did wrong and broke kinship bonds learn

Then they who so cruelly plotted and schemed

That they themselves are the slapped cheek.

Will know they alone bear guilt so extreme

أَرادوا قَتلَ أَحمَدَ ظالِموهُ

أَرادوا قَتلَ أَحمَدَ ظالِموهُ

وَلَيسَ بِقَتلِهِ فيهِم زَعيمُ

وَلَيسَ بِقَتلِهِ فيهِم زَعيمُ

His oppressors intended to kill Ahmad,

Seeking to murder Ahmad though no guide

Yet none among them can guarantee his killing.

Could sanction such hate or take credit with pride

وَدونَ مُحَمَّدٍ مِنّا نَدِيٌّ

وَدونَ مُحَمَّدٍ مِنّا نَدِيٌّ

هُمُ العِرنينُ وَالأَنفُ الصَميمُ

هُمُ العِرنينُ وَالأَنفُ الصَميمُ

And before Muhammad stands a company of ours:

We band with Mohammed, united arise

They are the nose's bridge and the very nose itself.

To face the unworthy, the unjust, the unwise
