عَلىdespite نَأيِهِمtheir remoteness وَاللَهُand God بِالناسِtoward people أَروَدُgentler
عَلى نَأيِهِم وَاللَهُ بِالناسِ أَروَدُ
Lo, has our Lord's deed reached our people across the sea,
Behold, has not our gulf been wrought by our Lord
far away as they are? And God is gentler toward mankind.
To their detriment, while God is most gentle with mankind?
فَيُخبِرَهُمso it may inform them أَنَّthat الصَحيفَةَthe document مُزِّقَتwas torn apart

وَأَنّ كُلّ ما لَم يَرضَهُ اللَهُ مُفسَدُ
So it may inform them that the document has been torn apart,
He will tell them the pact has been torn to pieces
and that everything God does not approve is undone.
And that all that does not please God corrupts

Falsehood and amassed sorcery took turns upon it,
It was stirred by lies and assembled sorcery
and no sorcery was found to ascend at time's end.
No other sorcery will ascend at the end of time

Those who were no weaklings in the matter rallied to it,
Those with no shred of dignity flocked to it
so its bird flutters back and forth at its own head.
So it fluttered aimlessly in their heads
وَكانَتand would have been كِفاءًfitting recompense وَقعَةٌa battle بِأَثيمَةٍat Athimah

And a battle at Athimah would have been fitting recompense,
And it was a fitting consequence of a sinful deed
so that a forearm and a neck might be severed there,
For an arm to be severed and a commander stripped of his title

and the inhabitants of the two Meccas would depart and flee,
The people of the two holy places will flee in panic
their flanks trembling for fear of harm.
Their horses will tremble in fear of evil

And a ploughman would be left weighing his course,
A farmer will be left to decide his own fate
whether then to head for Tihamah or go up to Najd.
At that time, will he find support there?

And a battalion would ascend between the two Akhshabs,
A band will ascend the two hills
bearing a load of arrows, bows, and arrow-shafts.
Armed with lances, arrows, and bows

So, if glory rises for any of Mecca's townsmen,
Whoever’s pride stems from Mecca
our glory in the heart of Mecca is more ancient.
Our pride stems from within Mecca, where we were born

We grew up there when its people were few,
We were raised there while its people were few
and never ceased to grow in goodness and earn praise.
We have never ceased to gain more virtue and glory

And we feed people until they leave their surplus,
We feed others until benefactors are left with nothing
when the hands of the lot-drawers are set trembling.
When the hands of the generous tremble

May God reward a band at al-Hajun who followed one another,
May God reward the succession of Hajūn men
in an assembly that leads to sound judgment and gives right guidance,
Who give wise counsel to the chieftain's council

Sitting by the Hajūn ruins as though they are
chieftains—nay, they are mightier and more glorious.
Laborers - no, they are far nobler and more magnificent

Every falcon has aided it as though
stiff-legged when walking in the trailing skirt of his mail.
When it marches clad in armor it neighs

Bold before the gravest crises, as though he were
Valiant amidst fierce trials as though it is
a firebrand blazing in both hands of one fetching fire.
A flaming meteor in the grip of a blacksmith

One of the noblest in Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib's line;
Of the most generous descendants of Lu’ayy ibn Ghalib
when subjected to humiliation, his face darkens.
When resolved, his face flushes red

Long of sword-baldric, half his shin exposed,
Tall, half his leg bared
through his countenance comes rain from the clouds, and good fortune is granted.
His countenance refreshed by the clouds’ rain

His ash-heap is vast; he is a lord and a lord's son,
Great of prestige, a chieftain and son of a chieftain
urging hospitality to guests and bringing people together.
Who incites hospitality and brings men together

And he builds something sound for the sons of the clan,
And builds righteousness for his clansmen’s sons
when we travel through the lands, and he smooths the way.
While we roam the lands, paving the way

Every blameless man pressed for this peace,
All the innocent have fortified this peace
great of banner, whose conduct then earns praise.
Noble of standard - his command then brings glory

They settled what they settled during their night, then met the morning,
They concluded their nighttime council, then awoke
at their ease, while the rest of the people lay asleep.
At ease, while all others still slept

They returned Sahl ibn Bayḍā content
and Abu Bakr and Muhammad were gladdened by it.
Abu Bakr was pleased, as was Muhammad

وَكُنّاand we were قَديماًlong ago قَبلَهاbefore it نَتَوَدَّدُcultivating friendship
وَكُنّا قَديماً قَبلَها نَتَوَدَّدُ
When did the tribes share in most of our affairs?
When will the tribes share in all our affairs
And long ago, before it, we cultivated friendship.
When we were once intimate friends?
وَكُنّاand we were قَديماًof old لاnot نُقِرُّwe tolerate ظُلامَةًinjustice
وَكُنّا قَديماً لا نُقِرُّ ظُلامَةً

وَنُدرِكُ ما شِئنا وَلا نَتَشَدَّدُ
And of old we would not tolerate injustice,
Once we would not tolerate oppression
and attained what we wished without being harsh.
We seized what we desired and were unbending

So, O people of Qusayy, have you any care for yourselves,
Men of Quraysh, do you have resolve in your souls?
and have you any care for what tomorrow brings?
What will tomorrow bring?

لَدَيكَ البَيانُ لَو تَكَلَّمتَ أَسوَدُ
For I and you are as a speaker said:
As the poet said to you - eloquence is yours
The explanation lies with you, if only you would speak, Aswad.
If only you would speak out, even in darkness!
