عَنِfrom البَغيِwrongdoing فيin بَعضِsome of ذاthis المَنطِقِspeech
Come to your senses, sons of Ghalib, and desist
Wake up, O sons of Ghalib, and desist
From wrongdoing in some of this talk.
From oppression in this region
وَإِلّاand if not فَإِنّيthen I indeed إِذاًthen خائِفٌfearful
بَوائِقَcalamities فيin دارِكُمyour abode تَلتَقيconverge
And if not, then I indeed fear
Otherwise I fear the consequences -
Calamities converging in your abode,
Calamities will befall your homes
تَكونُwill be لِغَيرِكُمُfor others besides you عِبرَةًa lesson
وَرَبِّby the Lord of المَغارِبِthe wests وَالمَشرِقِand the east
That will be a lesson to others,
And become a lesson for others
By the Lord of the wests and the east—
By the Lord of the West and the East
كَماjust as نالَbefell مَنthose who كانَwere مِنfrom قَبلِكُمbefore you
ثَمودٌThamud وَعادٌand Ad فَمَنso who ذاis it that بَقيsurvived
Like what befell those who were before you:
Just like those before you -
Thamud and Ad—who, then, survived?
Thamud, Aad - who remains?
فَحَلَّthen descended عَلَيهِمupon them بِهاbecause of it سَخطَةwrath
مِنَfrom اللَهِGod فيin ضَربَةِthe blow of الأَزرَقِthe blue-eyed one
Then wrath descended upon them for it,
Upon them descended His wrath
From God, at the blue-eyed one's blow,
In the strike of al-Azraq
غَداةَon the morning أَتَتهُمcame to them بِهاwith it صَرصَرٌa fierce, cold wind
وَناقَةُand the she-camel of ذيthe Possessor of العَرشِthe Throne إِذwhen تَستَقيshe seeks water
On the morning a fierce, cold wind brought it upon them,
The morning the roaring wind came
And the she-camel of the Lord of the Throne, when she sought water,
And the she-camel of the Throne when she drank
غَداةَon the morning يعضُّhe makes bite بِعُرقوبِهاinto her hock
حُساماًa sharp sword مِنَfrom الهِندِIndia ذاpossessing رَونَقِluster
On the morning he made her hock feel the bite
The morning she chewed with her molars
Of a gleaming sword from India.
A sword from Indian steel of splendor
وَأَعجَبُand more wondrous مِنthan ذاكَthat مِنamong أَمرِكُمyour affairs
عَجائِبُmarvels فيin الحَجَرِthe stone المُلصَقِstuck fast
And stranger than that, among your affairs,
More amazing than that is your affair
Are marvels in the stone stuck fast
Wonders in the clinging rock
بِكَفِّto the palm of الَّذيthe one who قامَrose منbecause of حَينهhis doom
إِلىtoward الصابِرِthe patient one الصادِقِthe truthful one المُتَّقيthe God-fearing one
To the palm of the one who rose, driven by his doom,
In the palm of the one who stood
Against the patient, truthful, God-fearing man.
To the patient, truthful and God-fearing
فَأَيبَسَهُso He made it rigid اللَهِGod فيin كَفِّهِhis palm
عَلىagainst رغمِهِhis will الجائِرِthe unjust الأَحمَقِthe foolish
So God made it rigid in his palm,
So Allah withered it in his palm
Against the will of that unjust fool—
Despite the ignorant tyrant
أُحَيمِقِthe little fool of مَخزومِكُمyour Makhzum إِذwhen غَوىhe went astray
لِغَيّbecause of the error of الغُواةِthe erring وَلَمand did not يَصدُقِspeak truth
Your Makhzum's little fool, when he went astray,
Curse the foolishness of Makhzoom
Through the error of the erring, and spoke no truth.
When he strayed towards the straying disbelievers
