Never did I fear that humiliation would be seen among you—
I never feared that humiliation would be seen among you,
O sons of ʿAbd Shams, my neighbors and my kin.
sons of ʿAbd Shams, my neighbors and kinsmen,
جَميعاًall together فَلاso may … not زالَتcease عَليكُمupon you عَظيمَةٌa grievous calamity
تَعُمُّengulfs all وَتَدعوand summons أَهلَهاits people بِالجَباجِبِwith the drums
All of you! May a mighty calamity never leave you,
all of you—may a grievous calamity never leave you,
sweeping over all and summoning its people at al-Jabājib.
engulfing all and summoning its people with drums.
أَراكُمI see you جَميعاًall together خاذِلينَwithholding aid فَذاهِبٌso one turning away
عَنِfrom النَصرِthe aid مِنّاfrom us أَوor غَوٍa misguided one مُتَجانِبِkeeping aloof
I see you all abandoning me: one turns
I see you all withholding aid—either turning away
away from aiding us, or, gone astray, holds aloof.
from coming to our aid, or misguided and keeping aloof.
