أَيا أَخَوَينا عَبدَ شَمسٍ وَنَوفَلا

أَيا أَخَوَينا عَبدَ شَمسٍ وَنَوفَلا

أُعيذُكُما أَن تَبعَثا بَينَنا حَربا

أُعيذُكُما أَن تَبعَثا بَينَنا حَربا

O our two brothers, ʿAbd Shams and Nawfal!

O my two brothers Abd Shams and Nawfal

I seek protection for you both from kindling war between us.

I implore you not to ignite war amongst us

فَلَولا اِتّقاءُ اللَهِ لا شَيءَ غَيرهُ

فَلَولا اِتّقاءُ اللَهِ لا شَيءَ غَيرهُ

لَأَصبَحتُمُ لا تمنَعونَ لَكُم سِربا

لَأَصبَحتُمُ لا تمنَعونَ لَكُم سِربا

For, were it not for fear of God—and nothing else—

If not for the fear of Allah, nothing else

you would have been unable to protect a flock of your own.

You would have gathered against us troops undeterred

وَما إِن جَنَينا في قُرَيشٍ عَظيمَةً

وَما إِن جَنَينا في قُرَيشٍ عَظيمَةً

سِوى أَن مَنَعَنا خَيرَ مَن وَطِئ التُربا

سِوى أَن مَنَعَنا خَيرَ مَن وَطِئ التُربا

And we have committed no grave offense among Quraysh,

We have committed no crime against the noble Quraysh

save that we protected the best of those who trod the dust.

Except that we have withheld what is best of the dust
