الحَمدُPraise لِلَهِto God الَّذيwho قَدindeed شَرَّفاhas honored
قَوميmy people وَأَعلاهُمand exalted them مَعاًall together وَغَطرَفاand ennobled them
Praise be to God, who has honored
Praise be to Allah, who has honored
My people, exalted them all, and ennobled them.
My people, raised them high together and singled them out.
قَدindeed سَبَقواthey surpassed بِالمَجدِin glory مَنwhoever تَعَرَّفاbecame known
They have surpassed in glory all who became known,
They have surpassed in glory those who boasted,
With inherited glory joining glory newly won.
An enduring, continuous glory that captivates.
لَوif أَنَّthat أَنفَthe leading edge الريحِof the wind جاراهُمraced them هَفاfaltered
وَصارَand became عَنbehind مَسعاتِهِمtheir noble endeavors مُخَلَّفاleft behind
If the wind's leading edge raced them, it would falter,
If the wind were to blow in their faces
And be left behind their noble endeavors.
And remain behind their hearing,
كَفَواthey spared إِساةَharm السَيِّof the wicked مَنwhoever تَكَلَّفاundertook a burden
كانواthey were لِأَهلِfor the people of الخافِقَينِEast and West سَلَفاforerunners
They spared whoever undertook a burden the harm of the wicked.
They would suffice to replace the evils of those who pretended
They were forerunners for the people of East and West,
And would be pioneers for the pure of heart.
وَأَصبَحواand became مِنto كُلِّall خَلقcreation خَلَفاsuccessors
هُمthey أَنجُمٌstars وَأَبدُرٌand full moons لَنwill never تُكسَفاbe eclipsed
And became successors to all creation.
They have become the successors of all mankind.
They are stars and full moons that will never be eclipsed,
They are stars and full moons that will never be eclipsed.
وَمَوقِفٌand a stand فيin الحَربِwar أَسنىnoblest مَوقِفاstand
أُسدٌlions تَهُدُّshatter بِالزَئيراتِwith their roars الصَفاsolid rock
And their stand in war is the noblest of stands:
A stance in war, the finest stance,
Lions that shatter solid rock with their roars,
Lions that roar with sublime roars
تُرغِمُpress into the dust مِنof أَعدائِهِنَّtheir enemies الأُنُفاthe noses
وَتَدفَعُand fend off الدَهرَTime الَّذيwhich قَدindeed أَجحَفاdealt unjustly
Grinding their enemies' noses into the dust,
That force their enemies’ noses in the dust
And fending off Time, which has dealt unjustly.
And repel the unjust times.
لَوif عُدَّwere reckoned أَدنىthe least of جودِهِمtheir generosity لَأَضعَفاit would far surpass
عَلىbeyond البِحارِthe seas وَالسَحابand the clouds اِستَرعَفاmake bleed
If the least of their generosity were reckoned, it would far surpass
If the least of their generosity were counted,
The seas, and make the clouds bleed.
It would overwhelm the seas and the clouds.
