سائل بي المختار كم قد ذعرته

ولليل أنباء وللصبح إخوة

حلبت خلوف الدهر كهلا ويافعا

The vicissitudes of fate made me weary

ألا رب ذي نصح يباعد عنكم

Roses are red, violets are blue

إذا ما رأيت السن لا تعظ امرأ

When I see an old man

ويوم لقينا الخثعمي وخيله

And the day we met Al-Kuthami and his cavalry

فإن تك أمي من نساء أفاءها

If my mother is one of the captive women

عجبت سليمى أن رأتني شاحبا

Wondered Sulaima when saw me pale

ويوم بحولايا فضضت جموعهم

And one day I broke their armies

لنعم ابن أخت القوم يسجن مصعب

How excellent is Ibn aunt of the tribe imprisoning Mus'ab

نفيت لصوص الأرض ما بين عانة

I denied the bandits of the land what lies between misery

فلم أر يوما مثل يوم شهدته

I have not seen a day like the day I witnessed,

إن تك خيلي يوم تكريت أحجمت

If my horses hesitated the day of Tikrit

مازلت أنفي الخسف عني وأحتمي

I still deny ruin will befall me though I seek

ألا هل أتى الفتيان بالمصر أنني

Has not the news reached the young men of Egypt that I

أتوني بقياض وقد نام صحبتي

They brought a judge when my companions slept,

لكم بارد الدنيا ونصلى بحرها

You have the cold world and we pray with its heat

أبلغ أمير المؤمنين رسالة

Deliver a message to the Commander of the Faithful

وأبيض قد نبهته بعد هجعة وقد

And white I had awakened after slumber

يخوفني بالقتل قومي وإنما

My people threaten me with death, yet

بأي بلاء أم بأية نعمة

With what misfortune or favor

وابيض قد نبهته بعد هجعة

The white light awoke after slumber

لقيت شباما عند مسجد مخنف

I met youth at Makhnef mosque

لقيت شباما عند مسجد مخيف

I met youth at a dreadful mosque

تعودت إعطاء لما ملكت يدي

I grew accustomed to giving what my hand possessed,

وأبيض قد نبهته بعد هجعة

And white I had awakened after a slumber

والأمن والخوف أيام مداولة

Security and fear are days that alternate

أقول لأصحابي بأكناف جازر

I say to my companions under the folds of Jazir

فإن بنت عني أو ترد لي إهانة

Should you turn away from me or seek to dishonor me

يقول أمير غادر جد غادر

A treacherous prince of the treacherous says:

أنشا يسائلني عنه وأطعنه

My love asks of me and implores me

يا لك يوما قل فيه ثقتي

O day when my trust was little

دعاني بشر دعوة فأجبته

A man called me to battle, so I responded

ويوم بباجسرى هزمت وغودرت

And a day at Badghis I was victorious and the enemy was routed

لو أن لي من شيعتي رجالا

If I had among my followers brave men,

متى تأتنا تلمم بنا في ديارنا

When will you come to us, complete us in our homes

لم يبق شيء يسامه أحد

Nothing left that anyone accuses

أتاني وعيد ابن الزبير فلم أرع

The threat of Ibn al-Zubayr came to me, but I was not afraid,

وقدما أبينا أن يقر ظلامه

And we refused our father to settle in his darkness

ألم تعلمي يا أم توبة أنني

Did you not know, O mother of repentance, that I

إلى الله أشكو ما نرى بجيادنا

To God I complain of what we see in our steeds

فلا كوفة أمي ولا بصرة أبي

Neither Kufa is my mother nor Basra my father,

وأبيض قد نبهته بعد هجعة

And white I had awakened him after a sleep

تذكرت قبل اليوم أية خلة

I remember the day before yesterday what offense

وقدما أبينا أن نقر ظلامة

We refused to lighten the darkness,

لقد زعم المختار أني وصحبتي

Al-Mukhtar has claimed that I and my friends

إن الملامة لا تبقي ولا تدع

Blaming does no good, nor does it let up,

ألم تعلمي يا أم توبة

Did you not know, O mother of repentance, that I

ولم أر شيئا مثل يوم شهدته

لم يجعل الله قلبي حين ينزل بي

ألم ترني بعت الإقامة بالسرى

أيرجو ابن الزبير اليوم نصري

ولا تحسبن الخير لا شر بعده

نفيت لصوص الأرض ما بين

لقد لقي المرء التميمي خيلنا

ويوما بسوراء التي عند بابل

يبيت النشاوى من أمية نوما

أنا الحر وابن الحر يحمل منكبي

صبحت شباما غارة مشمعلة

إني أنا الحر وابن الحر

وبالشام إخواني وجل عشيرتي

سلوا ابن رؤيم عن جلادي وموقفي

من مبلغ الفتيان إن أخاهم

أقول له صبرا عطي فإنما

متى تسألوني ما علي وتمنعوا

ويوما بتامرا ولو كنت شاهدا

فيا لك حسرة ما دمت حيا

أقول لفتيان مساعر أسرحوا

إذا أخذت كفي بقائم مرهف

إني رأيت بواد مقفر رجلا

بأن الملامة لا تبقي ولا تدع
