يحيى الغزال

من ظن أن الدهر ليس يصيبه

Whoever thinks that fate will not befall him

قصدت بمدحي جاهدا نحو خالد

I aimed my praise at Khalid, striving towards him,

فكأني بعمير

So it seems to me that Omair,

خرجت إليك وثوبها مقلوب

She came out to you with her dress inside out

يقول لي القاضي معاذ مشاورا

The judge Mu'adh says to me, consulting

والمرء يعجب من صغيرة غيره

A man wonders at the small fault of another

أنا شيخ وقلت في الشيخ ما

I am an old man and about old men I've said

أنجز فديتك ما وعدت فإن لي

Fulfill what you have promised me, for I have

وإن مقامي شطر يوم بمنزل

Though I stay but half a day in a house,

وتحسب من خبه أنه

You think he is too kind

فارعة الجسم هضيم الحشا

Slender of body, fleet of foot

الناس خلق واحد متشابه

People are all one kind, alike in form

وأغيد لين الأعطاف رخص

With soft and pliant limbs, and flexible grace

لا ومن أعمل المطايا إليه

No, nor do I serve those who curry favor,

أصبحت والله محسودا على أمد

I have become, by Allah's will, envied

أنا شاعر أهوى التخلي دون ما

I am a poet who prefers being single, without a wife,

إذا أخبرت عن رجل بريء

If you are told of a man free of faults

قالت أحبك قلت كاذبة

She said "I love you" I said "You lie"

وما هذه الدنيا سوى كر لحطة

This world is but a momentary stay

غمني عشقك للشطرنج

Your love of chess troubles me, O Ibrahim

لست تلقى الفقيه إلا غنيا

You will not find the scholar except wealthy

فسبحان من أعطاك بطشا وقوة

So glorified is He who gave you might and power

ألست ترى أن الزمان طواني

Do you not see that time has mocked me,

أدركت بالمصر ملوكا أربعه

I have seen in Egypt four kings,

كأن الملوك الغلب عندك خضعا

As though kings defeated are to you subdued,

ولا والهوى ما الإلف زار على النوى

Nor is it love when familiarity no longer dwells in the abode of intimacy,

جرداء صلعاء لم يبق الزمان لها

Bald and bare, time left her naught

أتاك أبو حفص ويحيى بن مالك

Abu Hafs and Yahya ibn Malik came to you,

وإن أعطيت سلطانا

If you are given authority,

قلت إذ كرر المقالة يكفي

I said, as he kept repeating his request, “Enough!

إقر السلام على إلف كلفت به

I bid peace to a beloved with whom I was burdened

قل للفتى نصر أبي الفتح

Tell the young man Nasr Abu al-Fath

سألت في النوم أبي آدما

In a dream I asked my father Adam,

إن سمي النبي فضله الله

The Prophet of great name, he excels

ويا ليت شعري أي شيء محصل

Oh how I wonder what can perceive

ومراء أخذ الناس

Austerity has captured people

فقلت له كلفتني فوق صنعتي

I said to him, "You have burdened me beyond my capacity,

بعض تصابيك على زينب

Some of your windows overlook Zainab

لعمري ما ملكت مقودي الصبا

By my life! I do not control my youth

كتبت وشوق لا يفارق مهجتي

I wrote, and longing clings to my innermost heart,

أيا لا هيا في القصر قرب المقابر

O you who are heedless in the palace near the graves

ريع قلبي لما ذكرت الديارا

My heart was set ablaze when I recalled the abodes

قال الأمير مداعبا بمقاله

The prince jokingly said in his speech:

وكم ظاعن قد ظن أن ليس آيبا

How many a complacent one thought he'd never leave

لقد سمعت عجيبا

I heard something strange

وخيرها أبوها بين شيخ

Her father offered her the choice between

وإن رجائي في الإياب إليكم

تداركت في شرب النبيذ خطائي

يعرف عقل المرء في أربع

لقد فسدت فما تلقى

ولما رأيت الشرب أكدت سماؤهم

كلفت يا قلبي هوى متعبا

أغنى أبا الفتح ما قد كان يأمله

أرى أهل اليسار إذا توفوا

ذكر الناس دار نصر لزرياب

بكرت تحسن لي سواد خضابي

يا راجيا ود الغواني ضلة

ولبس كثوب القس جبت سواده

قال لي يحيى وصرنا

فإذا ما نظرت في عرض الناس

إذا كنت ذا ثروة من غنى

إن الفتاة وإن بدا لك حبها
