1. Austerity has captured people
With sternness and gravity,
١. وَمُراءٍ أَخَذَ النا
سَ بِسَمتٍ وَقُطوبِ
2. And humility resembling fasting,
And weakness in slyness.
٢. وَخُشوعٍ يُشبِهُ السُق
مَ وَضَعفٍ في الدَبيبِ
3. I asked: "Does anything cause you pain?"
He said: "The burden of sins."
٣. قُلتُ هَل تَألَمُ شَيئاً
قالَ أَثقالَ الذُنوبِ
4. I said: "You care not for anything.
You are in an unfeeling mold."
٤. قُلتُ لا تُعنَ بِشَيءٍ
أَنتَ في قالَبِ ذيبِ
5. Indeed, you only thrive
On fraudulence in time of assault.
٥. إِنَّما تَبني عَلى الوَث
بَةِ في حين الوُثوبِ
6. There is nothing hidden from Him
About you, O sensible one.
٦. لَيسَ مَن يَخفى عَلَيهِ
مِنكَ هَذا بِلَبيبِ
