- أبا مجرم ما غير الله نعمةAbu Mujrim, God has never altered a blessing
- أبعد الخيل أركبها وراداAfter the bay horses I used to ride
- أبعدت من بغلة مواكلةAway with you, you freeloading mule!
- أبلغا ربطة أنيYou two, tell Rabṭa that I
- أبلغي سيدتي باللهTell my lady, by
- أخطاك ما كنت ترجوه وتأملهWhat you hoped and yearned for has eluded you;
- أدعوك بالرحم التي هي جمعتI appeal to you by the bond of kinship that has brought
- إذا جئت الأمير فقل سلامWhen you come before the emir, say: “Peace
- أرى الشهباء تعجن إذ غدوناI see the gray-white one kneading as we set out at dawn,
- ألا أبلغ لديك أبا دلامهNow carry this message to Abu Dulama:
- ألا أيها المهدي هل أنت مخبريNow, O al-Mahdi, will you tell me?
- ألا لا تلمني إن فررت فإننيAh, do not blame me if I flee—for truly, I
- ألا يا دوم لك النعيمHark, Dawm—bliss is yours:
- ألم تريا أن الخليفة لزنيHave you two not seen how the caliph has fastened me
- أما ورب العاديات ضبحاLo, by the Lord of the panting steeds,
- أمسيت بالأنبار يا ابن محمدEvening found you at al-Anbar, O son of Muhammad,
- أمير المؤمنين فدتك نفسيCommander of the Faithful, may my life be your ransom.
- إن الخليط أجد البين فانتجعواThe departing company resolved upon separation and journeyed forth in search of pasture;
- إن الناس غطوني تغطيت عنهمIf people draw a veil over me, I veil myself from them;
- إن كنت تبغي العيش حلوا صافياIf you seek a life sweet and unclouded,
- أنعت مهرا كاملا في قدرهI describe a colt, perfect in its proportions,
- إني استجرتك أن أقدم في الوغىIndeed, I sought your protection from being sent into the fray
- إني أعوذ بروح أن يقدمنيI seek refuge in Rawḥ from his sending me forward
- إني رأيتك في المنامIndeed, I saw you in a dream,
- إني لأحسب أن سأمسي ميتاIndeed, I think I shall be dead by evening,
- إني نذرت لئن رأيتك سالماI have vowed: if I see you safe and sound
- أيهذا الإمام سيفك ماضO Imam, your sword is sharp,
- بللت علي لا حييت ثوبيYou soaked my robe while it was on me—may no one greet you!
- خافي إلهك في نفس قد احتضرتFear your God for a soul already in death's throes;
- خافي إلهك في نفس قد احتضرتFear your God for a soul whose death throes have come—
- رأيتك أطعمتني في المنامI saw you feed me in a dream
- رأيتك في المنام كسوت جلديI saw you in a dream: you clothed my skin
- سقاني أبو بشر من الراح شربةAbu Bishr gave me a draught of wine,
- عينان واحدة ترى مسرورةTwo eyes: one appears delighted,
- قد رمى المهدي ظبياAl-Mahdi shot a gazelle,
- قف بالديار وأي الدهر لم تقفStand by the dwellings—for what age have you ever failed to stand
- لعلي بن صالح بن عليAli son of Salih son of Ali
- لقد خاصمتني دهاة الرجالThe shrewdest of men have wrangled with me,
- لو كان يقعد فوق الشمس من كرمIf any people could sit above the sun for sheer nobility,
- ما أحسن الدين والدنيا إذا اجتمعاHow beautiful are faith and worldly life when they come together!
- نح عنك الطبيب واسمع لنعتيSend the physician away and listen to my prescription.
- هاتيك والدتي عجوز همةThat woman there is my mother, old and decrepit,
- هل في البلاد لرزق الله مفترشIs there, anywhere in the land, one who lies down awaiting God’s provision?
- وجفاني الأمير كي أتقراThe prince shunned me so that I would take up recitation.
- وكثنا كزوج من قطا في مفازةWe were like a pair of sandgrouse in a desert waste,
- وكنا بالخليفة قد عقدناAnd with the caliph we had tied
- وكنا نرجي من إمام زيادةAnd we had hoped for some increase from an Imam—
- يا ابن عم النبي دعوة شيخO cousin of the Prophet, hear an old man's plea:
- يا أيها الناس قولوا أجمعين معاO people, all of you, say together:
- يا قوم إني رأيت الفيل بعدكمO my people, after leaving you, I saw the elephant;
- يقول لي الأمير بغير جرمThe prince says to me, though I have done no wrong:
