I appeal to you by the bond of kinship that has brought
I appeal to you by the kinship that has brought together
our nearest and our farthest kin together in closeness:
in closeness our near kin and the more distant.
إلَّاonly that سَمِعتَyou listen وَأَنتَand you are أكرَمُthe most generous مَنwhoever مَشَىwalked
مِنfrom مُنشِدٍa poetry reciter يَرجوhopes for جَزَاءَthe reward of المُنشِدِthe reciter
that you will surely listen—you, the noblest of all who have walked—
That you listen—you, the most generous ever to walk—
to a poet who hopes for a poet’s reward.
to a reciter hoping for a reciter's reward.
جاءَcame الصِّيامُfasting فَصُمتُهُso I observed it مُتَعَبِّداًdevoutly
أرجُوI hope for رَجَاءَthe hope of الصَّائمِthe fasting person المُتَعَبِّدِthe devout worshipper
The fast arrived, and I observed it in devotion,
Fasting came, so I observed it devoutly,
with all the hope of a fasting worshipper.
hoping for what a devout faster hopes for.
ولَقِيتُand I encountered مِنfrom أمرِthe demands of الصِّيَامِfasting وحَرِّهِand its heat
أمرَينِtwo ordeals قِيساwere both compared بالعَذَابِto the torment المُؤصَدِsealed shut
And in the experience of fasting and its heat, I met
And from fasting's demands and its heat I met
two ordeals that were measured against torment sealed shut.
two ordeals comparable to torment sealed shut.
وَسَجَدتُand I prostrated حَتَّىuntil جَبهَتيmy forehead مَشجُوجَةٌgashed

I prostrated until my forehead was split open
And I prostrated until my forehead was gashed
by the pebbles butting against me in the mosque.
from the pebbles battling me in the mosque.

So graciously release me, on account of your delay and what
So grant me release through your delay, for what
you have already made me undergo of affliction lying in wait.
you have already advanced me of the affliction held in store.
