إنِif النَّاسُpeople غَطّونيthey covered me تَغَطَّيتُI veiled myself عَنهُمُfrom them
إنِ النَّاسُ غَطّوني تَغَطَّيتُ عَنهُمُ
وَإنand if بَحَثواthey investigated عَنِّيabout me فَفِيهمthen in them مَبَاحِثُthings to investigate
وَإن بَحَثوا عَنِّي فَفِيهم مَبَاحِثُ
If people draw a veil over me, I veil myself from them;
If people conceal my faults, I turn a blind eye to theirs;
but if they probe into me, there are matters in them to probe.
And if they probe into me, there is much in them to probe.
وإنand if حَفَرواthey dug بِئرِيmy well حَفَرتُI dug بِئَارَهُمtheir wells
وإن حَفَروا بِئرِي حَفَرتُ بِئَارَهُم
لِيُعلَمَso that it may be known يَوماًone day كَيفَwhat … are like تِلكَthose النَّبَائِثُthe things unearthed
لِيُعلَمَ يَوماً كَيفَ تِلكَ النَّبَائِثُ
And if they dig my well, I shall dig their wells,
And if they dig my well, I dig their wells,
so that each may learn one day what those excavations are like.
So that one day it may be known what those diggings bring to light.
