Evening found you at al-Anbar, O son of Muhammad,
Evening has found you in al-Anbar, O son of Muhammad,
unable to make your way anywhere else.
You could not move away to any other place.
وَيلِيmy woe عَلَيكَover you وَوَيلَand woe أهليmy family كُلِّهِمall of them

Woe is me for you, and woe to all my family—
Woe is mine over you, and woe to all my family,
woe and long lamentation throughout our lives.
Woe and wailing, lasting long throughout life.
فَلتَبكِيَنَّso let them surely weep لَكَfor you النِّسَاءُthe women بِعَبرَةٍwith tears
وليَبكِيَنَّand let them surely weep لكfor you الرِّجالُthe men عَوِيلاloud wailing
Let the women weep for you, shedding tears,
So let the women surely weep tears for you,
and let the men weep for you with loud wailing.
And let the men surely weep for you with loud wailing.
منwho مُجمِلٍgraceful فيin الصَّبرِpatience عَنكَwithout you فَلَمfor ... not يَكُنwas
صَبريmy patience عَلَيكَover you غَدَاةَthe morning بِنتَyou departed جَميلاgraceful
Who can show seemly patience at your loss? For mine was not
Who can bear your absence with grace? For there was no
seemly—my patience in grieving you the morning you departed.
Grace in my patience at your loss the morning you departed.
يَجِدُونthey find أبدَالاًreplacements بهِfor him وأناwhile I امرُؤٌa man
لَوif متُّI died وَجداًof grief ماnot وَجَدتُI found بَدِيلاa substitute
Others find substitutes for him, but I am a man
They find replacements for him, while I am a man
who, were I to die of grief, would find no substitute.
Who, even if I died of grief, would find no substitute.
هَلَكَperished النَّدىgenerosity إذwhen بِنتَyou departed لابنfor the son of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
فَجَعَلتُهُso I made it لَكَfor you فيin التُّرابِthe dust عَدِيلاa companion
Generosity perished when you departed—for the son of Muhammad
The son of Muhammad's generosity perished when you departed,
I made it your equal and counterpart there in the dust.
So I made it your companion in the dust.
إنّيindeed I سألتُI asked النَّاسَthe people بَعدَكَafter you كُلَّهُمall of them
فَوَجَدتُso I found أسمَحَthe most generous مَنof those whom سَألتُI asked بَخيلاmiserly
I asked all the people after you,
Indeed, I asked all the people after you,
and found even the most generous of those I asked a miser.
And found the most generous of those I asked miserly.
ألِشقوَتيis it for my misfortune أُخِّرتُI was left behind بَعدَكَafter you للّتيfor that which
تَدَعُleaves العَزيزَthe mighty one منَamong الرِّجالthe men ذَليلاabased
Was I left behind after you only for my misery—for that which
Was I, to my misfortune, left behind after you for that which
leaves even the mighty among men abased?
Leaves the mighty among men abased?
ألِشقوَتيis it for my misfortune أُخِّرتُI was left behind بَعدَكَafter you لِلَّذيfor that which
يَدَعُleaves السمينَthe stout one مِنَamong العِيالthe dependents هَزيلاgaunt
Was I left behind after you only for my misery—for that which
Was I, to my misfortune, left behind after you for that which
leaves the well-fed among the dependents gaunt?
Leaves the stout among the household gaunt?
فَلأَحلِفَنَّso I shall surely swear يَمينَan oath حَقٍّof truth بَرَّةًrighteous
باللهِby God ماnot أُعطيتُI was given بَعدَكَafter you سُولاwhat I asked for
I shall swear a true and righteous oath:
So I shall surely swear a true and righteous oath:
by God, no request of mine has been granted since you.
By God, after you I have received nothing I asked for.
