أخطَاكَ ما كنتَ تَرجُوهُ وتَأمُلُه

أخطَاكَ ما كنتَ تَرجُوهُ وتَأمُلُه

فاغسِل يَدَيكَ مِنَ العبَّاسِ بالياسِ

فاغسِل يَدَيكَ مِنَ العبَّاسِ بالياسِ

What you hoped and yearned for has eluded you;

What you hoped for and looked forward to has eluded you.

so wash your hands of him—of Abbas—with despair.

So wash your hands of al-Abbas with despair.

واغسِل يَدَيكَ بِأشنَانٍ فَأَنقِهِمَا

واغسِل يَدَيكَ بِأشنَانٍ فَأَنقِهِمَا

مِمَّا تُؤَمِّلُ مِن مَعرُوفِ عبّاسِ

مِمَّا تُؤَمِّلُ مِن مَعرُوفِ عبّاسِ

And wash your hands with ushnan; cleanse them well

And wash your hands with saltwort; then cleanse them both

of whatever favor you hope to receive from Abbas.

جَزَاكَ رَبُّكَ يا عَبَّاسُ عَن فَرَجٍ

May your Lord reward you, Abbas, on Faraj’s behalf

with the Gardens of Eden—and on mine, with two bunches of myrtle.
