أَلَمhave ... not? تَرَيَاyou two seen أنَّthat الخَلِيفَةَthe caliph لَزَّنيhas bound me
بِمَسجِدِهِto his mosque والقَصرِand the palace ماwhat ليfor me ولِلقَصرِand with the palace
Have you two not seen how the caliph has fastened me
Have you two not seen that the caliph has bound me
to his mosque and palace? What have I to do with the palace?
to his mosque and palace? What have I to do with the palace?
فَقَدfor indeed صَدَّنيhe has barred me عَنfrom مَسجِدٍa mosque أستَلِذُّهُI delight in it
أُعَلّلُI amuse myself فيهin it بالسَّمَاعِwith music وبالخَمرِand with wine
He has kept me from a mosque I find delightful,
For he has indeed barred me from a mosque I delight in,
where I beguile myself with music and wine.
where I amuse myself with music and wine.
وكَلَّفَنيand he has imposed on me الأولىthe noon prayer جميعاًall together وعَصرَهاand its afternoon prayer
فَويليso woe to me منfrom الأُولىthe noon prayer وعَوليand my wailing مِنَfrom العَصرِthe afternoon prayer
He has made me attend the noon prayer in congregation, and the afternoon prayer as well;
And he has imposed both the noon prayer and its afternoon prayer on me.
woe is me for noon, and alas for the afternoon!
So the noon prayer brings me woe, and the afternoon prayer makes me wail!
أُصلِّيهِماI pray them both بالكُرهِunwillingly فيin غَيرِother than مَسجديmy mosque
فماso there is no ليfor me مِنَfrom الأولىthe noon prayer ولاnor العَصرِthe afternoon prayer مِنany أَجرِreward
I perform them both unwillingly, in a mosque other than my own,
I pray them both unwillingly, in a mosque not my own,
so I gain no reward from noon or afternoon.
so I have no reward from either the noon or the afternoon prayer.
يُكَلِّفُنيhe demands of me مِنfrom بعدِafter ماthat شِبتُI have grown gray تَوبَةًrepentance
يحطُّhe removes بهاthrough it عَنّيfrom me المثاقِيلَthe weights مِنof وِزرِيmy sin
After I have gone gray, he imposes upon me a repentance
He demands repentance of me after I have grown gray,
by which the crushing weights of my burden of sin would be lifted.
by which he would lift from me the weights of my sin.
لَقَدindeed كانthere were فيamong قوميmy people مَسَاجِدُmosques جَمَّةٌmany
وَلَمand did not يَنشَرِحopen with delight يَوماًon any day لِغِشيَانِهاat visiting them صَدريmy breast
Among my people there were mosques aplenty,
Indeed, there were many mosques among my people,
yet never once did my heart warm to frequenting them.
yet my breast never opened with delight at visiting them.
وواللهِand by God ماnot ليfor me نِيَّةٌintention فيin صلاتهhis prayer
ولاnor البِرُّrighteousness والإحسانُand kindness والخَيرُand goodness مِنof أمريmy concern
And by God, I have no sincere intent in joining his prayer,
And by God, I have no intention of performing his prayer,
nor are piety, charity, and goodness any part of my ways.
nor are righteousness, kindness, and goodness my concern.
وَمَاand what ضَرَّهُharm would it do him واللهُand God يغفِرُmay forgive ذَنبَهُhis sin
لَوَif انّthat ذُنوبَthe sins العَالَمينَall mankind علىupon ظَهرِيmy back
What harm would it do him—may God forgive his sin—
And what harm would it do him—may God forgive his sin—
if the sins of all mankind were borne upon my back?
if the sins of all mankind lay upon my back?
