Two eyes: one appears delighted,
Two eyes: one is seen rejoicing,
rejoicing in her imam, while the other sheds tears.
Exultant in its imam, while the other sheds tears.
تبكيweeps وَتَضحَكُand laughs مَرَّةًat one time وَيَسُوؤهاand saddens it
ماwhat أبصَرَتit has seen وَيَسُرُّهاand gladdens it ماwhat تَعرِفُit knows
She weeps and laughs at once; she is grieved
It weeps and laughs at once, and is saddened by
by what she beholds and gladdened by what she knows.
What it has seen, yet gladdened by what it knows.
فَيَسُوؤهاso saddens it مَوتُdeath of الخَلِيفةِthe caliph مُحرِماًin a sacred state
ويَسُرُّهاand gladdens it أنthat قامَhas risen هذاthis one الأَرأفُthe more compassionate one
The caliph's death while in sacred consecration grieves her,
So it grieves that the caliph died in a sacred state,
and she rejoices that this more compassionate one has arisen.
And rejoices that this more compassionate one has risen.
ماnot إنreinforces the negation رأيتُI have seen وَلاnor سَمِعتُI have heard كماlike what أرَىI see

شعراًhair أرَجِّلُهُI comb it وآخَرَand other hair أنتِفُI pluck
Never have I seen or heard of anything like what I now see:
Never have I seen or heard the like of what I see:
verse that I comb and dress, and other verse that I pluck.
Hair that I comb, and other hair that I pluck.
هَلَكَhas perished الخلِيفةُthe caliph ياO لأُمَّةِto the community of أحمَدٍAhmad
فَأتَاكُمُso there came to you مِنfrom بَعدِهِafter him مَنone who يَخلُفُsucceeds
The caliph has perished—alas for the nation of Ahmad!—
The caliph has perished—O community of Ahmad!
but after him there has come to you one who shall succeed him.
So after him there came to you one who succeeds him.
أهدَىbestowed لهذاon this one اللهُGod فَضلَthe favor of خِلافَةٍa caliphate
وَلِذاكَand for that one جَنَّاتِgardens of النَّعيمbliss تُزَخرَفُare adorned
God bestowed upon this man the grace of the caliphate,
God bestowed on this one the favor of the caliphate,
and for that man the Gardens of Bliss are being adorned.
And for that one, the gardens of bliss are adorned.
فَابكُواso weep لِمَصرَعِfor the death of خَيرِكُمthe best of you وَوَلِيِّكُمand your guardian
واستَشرِفُواand look up expectantly لِمَقَامِto the station of ذاthis one وتَشَرَّفُواand take pride
So weep for the fall of your best man and guardian,
So weep for the death of your best man and your guardian,
and look eagerly to this man's reign, and take pride.
And look up to this one's station, and take pride.
