Why have you imprisoned me and torn my cloak?
أمنis it because of صهباءtawny wine ريحscent المسكmusk فيهاin it
أمن صهباء ريح المسك فيها
ترقرقit shimmers فيin الإناءthe vessel لدىwhen المزاجmixing
ترقرق في الإناء لدى المزاج
Is it for a tawny wine with the scent of musk
that shimmers in the vessel when it is mixed?
عقارwine مثلlike عينeye الديكthe rooster’s صرفٌundiluted
عقار مثل عين الديك صرفٌ
كأنas though شعاعهاits gleam لهبflame السراجthe lamp’s
كأن شعاعها لهب السراج
A pure wine, colored like a rooster’s eye,
whose gleam is like the flame of a lamp.
وقدand it was طبختcooked بنارby the fire اللهof God حتىuntil
وقد طبخت بنار الله حتى
لقدindeed صارتit became منfrom النطفthe droplets النضاحthe spray
لقد صارت من النطف النضاح
It was cooked by God’s fire until
it became a spray of droplets.
تهشthey delight لهاin it القلوبhearts وتشتهيهاand desire it
تهش لها القلوب وتشتهيها
إذاwhen برزتit appears ترقرقit shimmers فيin الزجاجglass
إذا برزت ترقرق في الزجاج
Hearts delight in it and long for it
when it appears, shimmering in glass.
أقادam I led إلىto السجونprisons بغيرwithout جرمa crime
أقاد إلى السجون بغير جرم
كأنيas though I were بعضone of عمالofficials الخراجthe land tax
كأني بعض عمال الخراج
Am I led to prison without a crime,
as though I were one of the tax officials?
ولوand if معهمwith them حبستI were confined لكانit would be سهلاًeasy
ولو معهم حبست لكان سهلاً
ولكنيbut I حبستwas confined معwith الدجاجthe chickens
ولكني حبست مع الدجاج
Had I been confined with them, it would have been easy,
but I was confined with the chickens:
دجاجاتٌhens يطيفhe circles بهنaround them ديكٌa rooster
دجاجاتٌ يطيف بهن ديكٌ
يناجيhe converses بالصياحby crowing إذاwhen يناجيhe converses
يناجي بالصياح إذا يناجي
hens circled by a rooster
who speaks in cries whenever he speaks.
وقدand indeed كانتthey had been تخبرنيtelling me ذنوبيmy sins
وقد كانت تخبرني ذنوبي
بأنيthat I منfrom عقابكyour punishment غيرwould not escape ناجيescaping
بأني من عقابك غير ناجي
My sins had already been telling me
that I would not escape your punishment.
علىdespite أنيmy being وإنeven if لاقيتI encountered شراًharm
على أني وإن لاقيت شراً
لخيركfor your kindness بعدafter ذاكthat الشرharm راجيI remain hopeful
لخيرك بعد ذاك الشر راجي
Yet, though I have suffered harm,
I still hope for your kindness after that harm.
