عبد الله بن الزبير الأسدي

فلا تكونن كمن ألقته بطنته

So be not like the one whom his belly has laid

سأبكي وان لم تبك فتيان مذحج

I will weep even if the youths of Mudhij do not weep

أبا مطر شلت يمين تفرعت

A shower whose right hand is paralyzed, branched out

مشى ابن الزبير القهقرى فتقدمت

Ibn al-Zubayr retreated while

تأوب عين ابن الزبير سهودها

The eyes of Ibn al-Zubayr grew dim with sorrow

جملية أو عيهل شدقمية

A camel or a worn-out she-camel

تقلب للاصغاء رأسا كأنها

She turns her listening head as though

الله أعطاك المهابة والتقى

God has given you dignity and piety

وأسلمني حلمي فبت كأنني

My friend, your words moved me, though I could not understand their full meaning. Let us speak openly and seek wisdom.

سليل النصارى سدت عجلا ولم تكن

O progeny of Christians, you soon gained power

جاءت به عجز مقابلة

Her inability brought her to face him

وأمطله العصرين حتى يملني

I will stretch it out through the two eras until it wearies me

أيها العائذ في مكة كم

O you who take refuge in Mecca, how much

وقد لاح في الغور الثريا كأنما

White banner fluttering for the charge

فهذي لأيام الحروب وهذه

So these are for the days of wars, and those

والا فأسلمهم إلي أدعهم

And if not, then surrender them to me, I will make them

وليس بدهري فتنة غير أنني

My days bring no misfortune but this alone -

رب منهل طام وردت وقد خوى

My Lord, to a deserted spring you came when it had run dry

لو شددنا من أخدعيه قليلا

If we gathered a few of his deceits

إذا ركبوا الأعواد قالوا فأحسنوا

When they mount the wooden steeds, they say "Do good!"

سقيا لطيفك من خيال طارق

A drink for your gentle spirit from a visiting apparition

تهددني عجل وما خلت أنني

A hasty people threaten me, yet I have not been empty of that I am

أبى الليل بالمران أن يتصرما

The night refused to part with its darkness

تثعلبت لما أن أتيت بلادهم

When you came to their country, O fox,

أغاد أو الحدراء أم متروح

Whether in Aghad or Al-Hadra'a, a place for relaxation

أقول لابراهيم لما لقيته

I say to Ibrahim when I met him

كأن بني أمية حول بشر

The sons of Umayyah surround Bishr,

تداركني بشر بن مروان بعدما

Bishr son of Marwan came to my rescue after

أقول أمير المؤمنين عصمتنا

I say the Commander of the Faithful protected us

ألا طرقت رويمة بعد هدء

Has not the wild cow of Ruweimah wandered after calmness

ألم تر أن الله أعطى فخصنا

Have you not seen that Allah has gifted and honored us

وقد علم الحي اليمانون أنكم

The living Yemenis have realized that you are

إذا مات ابن خارجة بن حصن

When the son of Harithabin Hisn dies

لبشر بن مروان على الناس نعمة

Bishr son of Marwan is a blessing upon the people,

ألم ترني والحمد لله أنني

Did you not see me praising God that I

وأكف فضل القول ان له

I refrain from praising overmuch, for praise

ألم تر أن الجود أرسل فانتقى

Do you not see how generosity has sent forth and chosen

عطاؤكم للضاربين رقابكم

Your necks offered to the executioner’s blade

فهل لكم فيكم وأنتم بأمة

So is there amongst you when you are a peaceful nation

رمى الحدثان نسوة آل حرب

The two youths pelted the women of the tribe of Harb

ومثوب بالأقربين كأنه

And one who rewards kin as if he were

ألا أبلغ معاوية بن حرب

Tell Mu'awiya ibn Harb

أليس ورائي ان بلاد تجهمت

Is there not beyond me a country darkened,

بنت لكم هند بتلذيع بظرها

Hind built for you with her soft belly

لا أحسب الشر جارا لا يفارقني

I do not think hardship will persist and not leave me

معاوي أننا بشر فأسجح

Mu'awiya, we are but humans, so forgive

ألم تر أني قد أخذت جعيلة

Have you not seen that I have taken a concubine

أصرم بليلى حادث أم تجنب

Is it a mishap with Layla, or avoidance?

سأشكر عمرا أن تراخت منيتي

I will be thankful all my life that my wishes slackened

كأني بعبد الله يركب ردعه

I see Abdullah riding his swift steed

لقد أنكحت خوف الهزل عبدا

You have wedded fear of jest a slave,

أجدي إلى مروان عدوا فقلصي

Complain to Marwan, an enemy, so scold him

حنت قلوصي وهنا بعد هدأتها

My heart ached and softened after being hardened

إن كنت لا تدرين ما الموت فانظري

If you do not know what death is, look

لا تجعلن مبدنا ذا سرة

وسابغة تغشى البنان كأنها

أعاذل غضي بعض لومك أنني

فلا يصرم الله اليمين التي علت

ألم تر أن الدهر أخنت صروفه

أني لمن نبعة صم مكاسرها

وعيس تبارى بركبانها

لعمرك ما هذا بعيش فيبتغى

بنى دارم هل تعرفون محمدا

أبت عينه لا تذوق الرقاد

ألا أبلغ يزيد بن الخليفة أنني

أحابس كيد الفيل عن بطن مكة

الا أبلغ عبيد الله عني فإنني

أيا راكبا أما عرضت فبلغن

جزى الله عني مصعبا أن سيبه

أرى الحاجات عند أبي خبيب

قل للفرزدق والسفاهة كاسمها
