أرقت ومعرضات الليل دوني
I stayed up while the sides of night turned away from me
أمن طرب بكيت وذكر أهل
From passion have I wept and memory of friends
وأشرق اجبال العوير بفاعل
And the mountains of Uwair shone with a doer
ألا أيها اللاحي كفاك عتابا
O negligent one, enough blaming
ظعن اذا قابلن قصر مقاتل
The berries yearn when facing a warrior's palace
ما اعتاد حب سليمى حين معتاد
The love of Sulaima was not habitual when it became habitual
إذا بركت خرت على ثفناتها
If she smiles her blessing, it rains on her lips
ترحل إخواني بعقلي إنني
My brethren journeyed in my mind, for every neighbor
يا ناق خبي خببا زورا
O she-camel, pace gently, do not hurry
ومطرد الكعوب كأن فيه
And the dispersing of sorrows as though in it
حل الشقيق من العقيق ظعائن
The anemones shed their petals,
قفي قبل التفرق يا ضباعا
Stop, O hyenas, ere we part,
وقالوا فقيم قيم الماء فاستجز
They said, "O caretaker of the water, do your best
عفا من آل فاطمة الفرات
The Euphrates has forgiven the family of Fatima
وراشت الريح بالبهمي أشاعره
The wind tousled his hair
إنا محيوك فأسلم أيها الطلل
We greet you, so surrender, O towering heights,
فخر على شؤمى يديه فذادها
His hands exult in my misfortune, so I repel them
ألا يا ديار الحي بالأخضر أسلمي
O dwellings of the living greened with meadows, I bid you peace,
الى خدب سبط ستيني
To a sixty year old woman with a humpback
يسارقن الكلام الي لما
They steal words from me when
أتاني من الأسد النذيرة بعدما
The lion's harbinger came to me after
ألا من مبلغ زفر بن عمرو
O deliverer of Zufar son of 'Amr
إذا مات ابن خارجة بن حصن
When Barrage's son dies
قد علم الابناء من غلامها
The sons have known whose servant he is
ألا بكرت مي بغير سفاهة
Oh, the wine was not frivolously poured,
ليس الوكاء بأهل أن يسود ولا
It is not for the loyal to rule, nor
ومن يك أرعاه الحمى اخواته
He who his tribe abandoned when fever's flame
ألا عللاني كل حي معلل
Alas! Every living being is afflicted
طرقت جنوب رحالنا من مطرق
فانقض قد فات العيون الطرفا
نأتك بليلى نية لم تقارب
كأن العقيليين يوم لقيتهم
ومن تكن الحضارة أعجبته
وإني لمهد مدحة وهدية
أنادي خليطا بائنا حين أعصفت
تخاذل جفرانا ولو قد تعاونا
قد صبحت قباقبا صباحا
ألا أبلغ سراة بني زهير
جزى الله خيرا والجزاء بكفه
أطفن ببلكوث ثلاثا يعدنه
يا زفر بن الحارث بن الأكرم
لعمر بني شهاب ما اقاموا
