1. O deliverer of Zufar son of 'Amr
The best of words are those spoken by the wise

2. Do you not see me shunned like an ostrich
Yet none shun the mild-mannered like me

3. I am mocked and thought a mere gazelle
The brave ignore what I endure

4. He interferes with news and mocks me
The mockery of the wretched is painful and bleak

5. Perhaps the hunt will become something
That shows itself when it pounces or rises

6. A terrifying sight that makes peers recoil
From those who spend the night wailing for it

7. He roams the meadows of Al-Ghamrin
At times dwelling in his barren abodes

8. Is this but an amusement for the leader of Quraysh
Burdened with worries, his brow furrowed

9. From the firm knotted bows, the unleashing of war
Against the resilient, on them the blame lies

10. When the sedentary hear his battle cry
They tremble and cower in tremendous fright

11. Bared, he crouches wherever night befalls
By neglect, the stars know him

12. Ghouls wander howling should they see him
And jinn rejoice in ecstatic delirium

13. My father who led fate forcibly
His passion unbridled, refusing compliance

14. Balking the riders' steeds away from him
And fasting a month from his fervent rage

15. When enraged, his nostrils flare
As passion seizes him vehemently

16. Before the son of the ostrich I was hapless
Subdued when adversaries clash

17. How inferior is the ostrich to my father
When ancestry and unclehood are counted

18. My venerable uncle is Sa'd's son Sa'sa'ah
And Tamim's glory brings me prestige

19. The banners of 'Araquim all rally to me
As do Shuayban son of Thu'alabah's cavalry

20. From him I inherited glory's summit
And every father bequeaths what he holds dear

21. But Al-Hubab's progeny are now worthless
When the tardy and old are counted

22. As if Abu Al-Hubab's progeny are now
A donkey bitten by a vicious stallion

23. A'mir and Bana Kilab have built for you
A lofty edifice that equals no other

24. When Hawazin or Sulaym are counted
You are their noblest scion, their essence

25. We found Sa'q like a ram of Bani Nufayl
Worthy of glory, the Wise One knows

26. When he would bite some foolish folk
He would butt the riders in the protected herd

27. With the bite of a bald scabby cheeked lout
He knocks him senseless, the Wise One knows
