سود صناعية إذا ما أوردوا

When they attack with their black army

ترعى فزارة في مقر بلادها

The meadow grazes in its homeland's abode

وهل داع فيسمع عبد عمرو

Is there any friend whose prayer is heard for the slave of Amr

ويحمل بزي ذو جراء كأنه

He bears a cloak of fine wool as though he were

أفراسنا بالسهل بدلن مذحجا

Our horses in the plain changed Madhija

وبالفيفا من اليمن استثارت

The tribes of Yemen were stirred up

ألا من مبلغ أسماء عني

Oh, who will bear my greeting

ونعم أخو الصعلوك أمس تركته

How pleasant a vagrant’s brother was yesterday when I left him

ألا يا ليت أخوالي غنيا

Oh, if only my uncles were wealthy,

أنازلة أسماء أم غير نازله

Her name is Asma or some other fair one

قضينا الجون عن عبس وكانت

We spent the night separated by frowns, and the

تركت نساء ساعدة ابن مر

I left the women of Sa'ida, son of Murr

فإن تنج منها يا ضبيع فإنني

If you escape, O hyena, then I swear

توضحن في علياء قفر كأنها

In the highest part of a barren desert they were revealed

أظن الكليب خانني أو ظلمته

I think my dog has betrayed me or I have wronged him,

تقول ابنة العمري ما لك بعدما

The daughter of Al-Amri said, after seeing me healthy again like a tortured prisoner:

عجبا لواصف طارق الأحزان

I wonder at the describer of the visitor of sorrows

لقد تعلم الخيل المغيرة أننا

The horses have learned when people attack

لله غارتنا والمحل قد شجيت

Our refuge crumbled and the place was left in ruins

إني إذا انتترت أصرة أمكم

When your mothers' ropes are untied

لقد تعلم الحرب أني ابنها

War has learned that I am its son

رهبت وما من رهبة الموت أجزع

I have felt fear, yet nothing makes me more afraid than death

وأنت لسوداء المعاصم جعدة

You belong to the tight-curled-haired maidens of jet black tents

إني وإن كنت ابن سيد عامر

Though I am the son of Aamir's chieftain

ألا كل ما هبت به الريح ذاهب

Alas! All that the wind brought is gone,

لا تسقني بيديك إن لم أغترف

Do not make me drink from your hands if I do not draw near,

ألا أبلغ عويمر عن زياد

Should I not tell ‘Uwaimir about Ziyad,

جاؤوا بشهران العريضة كلها

They came with the whole of spacious Shahrān,

لا يرهب ابن العم مني صولة

My threats do not frighten the son of my uncle,

لعمرك ما تنفك عني ملامة

For goodness sake, you never cease to blame me

وما الأرض إلا قيس عيلان أهلها

Home is not but Qais Ailan, its people

هلا سألت بنا وأنت حفية

Why did you not ask us when you were a bride

بعث الرسول بما ترى فكأنما

The Messenger was sent with what you see, as though

لتسألن أسماء وهي حفية

Asma will certainly ask while she is lithe,

ألا من مبلغ عني زيادا

Who will inform Ziyad when at dawn

نحن قدنا الجياد حتى أبلنا

We spurred our steeds until we overwhelmed them,

وإنك لو رأيت أميم قومي

If you had seen the women of my tribe

صبحنا الحي من عبس صبوحا

We woke at dawn from a frowning gloom

هلا سألت إذا اللقاح تروحت

Why didn't you ask, when the pollen blew gently,

لقد علمت عليا هوازن أنني

Ulayya Hawazin surely knew that I

للمقربات غدو حين نحضرها

The horses are led out at dawn when we prepare them,

ألسنا نقود الخيل قبا عوابسا

Are we not the ones who urge on the steeds with gloomy determination

طلقت إن لم تسألي أي فارس

ألا طرقتك من خبت كنود

بني عامر غضوا الملام إليكم

سمونا بالجياد لحي ورد

تجنب نميرا ولا توطها

لعمري لقد أهدى زياد مقالة

قضى الله في بعض المكاره للفتى

وأبو أبي ما منيت بمثله

أنبئت قومي أتبعوني ملامة

زعم الوشاة بأن دومة أخلفت

يا رب قرن قد تركت مجدلا

يا لهفي على ما ضل سعيي

قل لزيد قد كنت تؤثر بالحل

عرفت بجو عارمة المقاما

وفدنا فآوينا بأشراف دارم

قتلنا يزيد بن عبد المدان

إذا شئت أن تلقى المناعة فاستجر

ويل لخيل سيل خيل مغيرة

وأهلكني لكم في كل يوم

كان التبابع في دهر لهم سلف
