1. Ulayya Hawazin surely knew that I
Am the true knightly guardian, Ja'far

2. And al-Maznuq knew that I dislike him
On an evening when the wind blew like a drawn sword

3. If he weakened at the clashing of spears I scolded him
And said to him, "Return advancing not retreating!"

4. And I told him that to flee is disgrace
Upon a man unless he has an excuse and is excused

5. Do you not see their spears assailing me
While you are a glorious steed so be patient

6. I wanted so that God would know that I
Was patient and fear the like of the day of Mushaqqar

7. By my life, and my life is not easy upon me
The cheek of the freeborn is surely pained by Musahhar's stab

8. Evil is the youth if you are one-eyed, castrated
Cowardly, so I have no excuse before any gathering

9. And they knew that I attack them
On an evening when the wind blew like a whirlwind

10. And I did not cast until I pierced his chest and throat
A piercing blow like a strongly-guided piercing spear

11. I say to a soul the like of which is not magnanimous
Restrain yourself, I am not negligent

12. If they were a group like us, they would not surpass us
But captives came to us, those who boast

13. They came at us with all of al-Shahran
And hounds swift as the lead camels
